Syed Alatas' first wife was reputedly a Malay of royal descent. He also married a daughter of the Chinese pepper trader and secret society leader, Khoo Tiang Poh.

Syed Alatas' mid-19th century mansion at 128 Armenian Street is a well-preserved example of an early Straits Electric-style Muslim bungalow.

The mansion now belongs to the Municipa Council and there are plans to rehabilitate it in a pilot restoration project to be carried out by the state with the French technical assistance. The building has been proposed as the premises of a heritage training centre for traditional building crafts training and heritage education.
