JUDGED

People are judged on their behaviour by others, but why must we have a fixed and common morality? Should the morals of a country not be open for change just as it's industries or political beliefs are? Laws should be easier changed, instead of so much trouble going through old outdated peers who are supposed to represent the common want of the people. Do you really believe the House of Lords is a good cross section of the community and capable of speaking for everyone in their ideals, behaviours and ethical stances on matters. Of course not, how could they? This is also something outside the power of the voter. How much power does this leave the voter with? Very little. Protests and petitions can only sway opinion in very individual cases or minor local issues such as new traffic lights. Public opinion does not count for much over laws and bills. How can people, of my age perhaps, sit in a room and decide whether on not I am safe to watch a film or video, or listen to a certain type of music or see a particular play? How can they believe they know what is better for my well being than I do? Even if they did, which they obviously don't, how do they think they can then order me to do only what is good for me.

I do believe in the censorship of certain material for children, but when I turn adult in the eyes of the law, I should be given the ability, no, the right, to do what I want to do, see what I want to see. I do not hold their opinion that human life is sacred, so it is up to me to decide my own fate. I hate the idea of people forcing their own particular brand of morality upon me and expecting me not to react but just accept their word as law. I should be free to make my own judgements. They can, if they wish, judge me against their particular idea of morality, just as I may judge them, but that's as far as it goes. They have no right to intervene or to invoke a punishment. If I do some activity in the privacy of my own home that is not affecting the rights of any other individual, then it is not the business of anyone else and should be treated accordingly. What difference does it make to anyone whether I happen to burn and inhale one weed or another? How does my personal habits inflict damage on the country or other people? They call what we have freedom, but in my eyes we live in the most constraining society on earth.

All I wish is for the ability to make informed decisions for myself without the intervention of so called public officials to contradict my beliefs.
