REVIEWS :

"DUBWARE is mutant dub music...a solid EP of high-energy dub...Aggressive tempos and incidental dub effects create a nuclear dancehall feel reminiscent of On-U Sound's Revolutionary Dub Warriors. The five selections are all fast-paced and intense with a very overt bass. Dubware's EP is a heady mix of millenarian disco dub that is effectively captures the expansive sound and power of reggae's amplified drum and bass attack. While very modern in conception, it also has an infectious sponginess in its riddims, and does not sacrifice melody in its ballroom floor groove." --Robert Nelson.  THE BEAT  vol. 18, No. 2, April 1999.

"The music is a treat-snappy, forward riddims with bass, guitar, synthesizers, sequencer and digital programming building a force field of dub that breaks into poly-rhythmic percussion at the drop of a beat. There is a multicultural aspect here too..." --Chuck Foster.  THE BEAT  vol.18, No. 2, April 1999.

"This CD pushes dub music behind the boundaries. If you like dub and experimental, this is a great taste for you...the CD reaches Jamaica as close as a Lee Perry vs. Adrian Sherwood could conjure up. Good production, diverse approach to songs, and originality..." --B.E. Mann.  REGGAE RHYTHMS  June 2, 1999.

"Visions of Babylon"

(ARSCD002)

"...Dubware achieves a majestic reggae sound a la Mute Beat: stately and highfalutin'..." --Chuck Foster. THE BEAT   vol. 19, No. 3, June 2000.

"...Then I realised that I was actually enjoying the album..." --Steve Barker - "On the Wire". BBC Radio Lancashire  (UK).

"Impressive debut from the Dubware crew delivering 10 21st century dubs, injecting a different perspective into the genre..."  --Steve Goldring - "The Right Vibe e-zine". THE DREADD CONNEXION  (UK), July 2000.

A note from the author of the work :

< What I've tried to do is taking electronic oriented sounds, such as electronic drum machines (TR808), bass line sequencers (TB303), tempo-matched delays proceeding within 8-notes, triplets, 16-notes, which form a rhythmic mortise with the song frame; and binding them together with ROOTS sounds from the 70's, such as Gibson Ripper bass, Stratocaster guitar, Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, analogue synthesizers, a four-piece horn section. Further, it seemed right to me to add some spice. You will find in my work the screams of a real Ghanaian ancient ceremonial rite, percussion loops from a rite for the baptism of a  new born "donno" (Ghanaian name for talking drum), loops of a four-piece djembé ensemble. My ultimate aim was to search some quite new sound, but still recognizable to the ears of a Roots-Reggae lover.>   VAL .

Dubware - featuring Val

ABOUT THAT DUBWARE SOUND :

Edited by E.J. Winner -nuff respect!-

The origin of this name is from the union of: "DUB", a musical genre, and "HARDWARE", the mixing desk and tape that provide the scaffolding for Dub music. If we look back to the roots of Dub, we find the re-mix as the vehicle for DJs to promote and spread their styles to a waiting, receptive audience, and the new music's been moshing the dancefloor ever since, influencing all current dance musics from house to trance. The project Dubware is to inject new life into this style. Instrumental Reggae Dub is the music for Dubware to develop, spread and promote. The project was created in 1998 by Val (aka Valerio Riccelli), musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, from Italy. He is responsible for all of the instrumentation, including custom selfbuilt analogue synthesizers. Bizarre sound effects, tempo-matched delays form rhythmic joints within the track frame, analogue and digital synthesized sounds arising from the real 'Roots' sounds of the 70's, savage reverberations, the aural equivalent of a stone cast in still waters, these form the unique components of the Dubware Sound. The first work from DUBWARE is "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that skank!", a five track mini album. "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got ..." is borrowed from Duke Ellington; the great Jazz composer who felt that even a great composition would be worthless if nobody could dance to it, and "skanking" is today's "swing". Dubware thus musically aims straight for the dance floor for complete audience satisfaction. On "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that skank!" we find Dubware's unique trademark grooves of percussion loops. Continuing Dub's bent towards innovation, you will also hear samplings of an ancient Ghanaian ceremony for the baptism of a new born, and the litany of the ceremonial rites for the coming of the "dry season".   "Visions of Babylon", a full length CD album, now forms the next step in the development of the Dubware sound. After the successful roots exploration on "It don't mean a thing...", we find "Visions of Babylon" broadening the base of musical innovation to include influences from the contemporary European dance club scene, and Dubware has the chops to accomplish this, a technical wizardy combined with a soul-drenched rhythmic sense, brimming with an uncommon wit well ahead of the dance music scene of the day. To put it bluntly, Dubware ROCKS. Not only to be admired by cultists of the genre, "Visions of Babylon" will speak musically to people from many walks of life, receiving wide recognition for Dubware's efforts and creativity, the balance between tradition and experimentation. Since its debut, Dubware's work has been receiving favorable attention from DJs of varied genres, and its music quickly entered the playlists of major market European and U.S.A. radio stations, still catching fire with both Reggae and Dance music audiences. Positive reviews on Dubware continue to appear in music magazines such as: The Beat, Dub Missive, Echoes, The Wire. But discover for yourself the infectious "riddims" of the Dubware sound. Once it hooks you, it won't let go, you'll skank 'til break-of-day, all the way to the next exciting chapter in the developping musical adventure that is DUBWARE.
