Welcome to Alipurduar Division

N. F. Railway

 

Alipurduar Division was set up in 1969 when the divisional scheme was introduced in N. F. Railway. Alipurduar is a Sub-divisional town of Jalpaiguri district and is situated on the foothills of Hamalayas.This division occupies a key position as it  acts as an important link between the Northeastern Region and the rest of the country and also as a gateway to Bhutan and Bangladesh.

 

The division extends from Raninagar to Agthori on B.G. and Siliguri Jn. To Agthori and Rangiya to Murkongselek including other branch lines on M.G. Area it serves include the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar in West Bengal, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup, Sonitpur, Darrang, North Lakhimpur, and Dhemaji in Assam, and West Kameng of Arunachal Pradesh.

 

The railway line on the division traverses through lush green tea gardens, agricultural fields, dense tropical forest and hills. Known since the days of Mahabharat, there are several millennium old temples in the region, some of the famous ones are, Shiva Temples of Baneswar and Tezpur and Gumpas(caves) of Jogighopa.


Manas Tiger reserve forest and angler’s paradise is 41 kms. from Barpeta Road Station, Buxa Tiger forest reserve is 2 kms. from Rajabhatkhawa station and Jaldapara Game Sanctuary is 4 kms. from Madarihat station, Phuntsholling, a resort a the foothill of Bhutan is 15 kms. away from Hasimara station.

 

Besides agricultural and forest produces (bamboo, wood, tea, jute, spice etc. ) important industries in the divisional area are an Oil refinery at Bongaigaon, a Match factory at Dhubri, a Plywood factory at Chalsa Dolomite mines in Jayanti Hills and Gypsum and limestone quarries in Bhutan Hills.
