Tale of a Fox and a Cat
Prologue
(Some 15 years before the Renkai Taiten)
Hiei walked quietly. Quietly so that he could have total awareness of his surrounding. Thieves! Liars! All of them! But what more can he expect? The Fobidden Child, abandoned by his own family. So it was no suprise that the thieves clan tried to steal his tear gem. But it still hurt. Just for once, Hiei really thought that he have found his family.
"I know how you feel", a voice said outloud in the darkness. The person the voice belong to sat up high in a Makai tree overlooking Hiei. She smile gently at him. In the darkness of the Makai forest, she seem to stand out so much under the moonlight. Her silvery hair shine as those of the stars as it fall in wave over shoulder. Her rosy red eyes stare at Hiei in understanding. Her clothes was not normal clothes at all, they were in fact made out of youkai furs, similar to those that the Youko clan wear. And strangely infact that this girl have ears and 2 tails of a cat. Cat demons were not known to wandered around in Makai by themselves.
Hiei growled. He did not like intrusions in his life. His problems was his own and no one else. "You? Know how I feel? Don't make me laugh! You have no idea what it is like to be me!"
"I know what it feel like to be alone. I know what it feel like to wallow in my own pains. I know what it feel like to bottle up my emotions", the girl calmly said as she slipped down from the tree. Her graceful present suddenly made Hiei feel like a clumsy oaf around her. She stepped bravely to Hiei so she was about 2 feet away from him.
Hiei stared at her. Surely, this was no ordinary demon with a death wish. "Who are you?"
"A friend to you if you wish, the name is Nekoi Ko"
chapter 1
Pain!
Flash of pain!
What was this?!
What is he feeling?!
Kurama open his eyes. Sat up in his bed and look around. His bed was covered in sweat. His body was no difference. What is happening?! Every night for the past 10 nights have been the same! Always at exactly 12 o'clock his body would feel like it is ripped apart by something.
Maybe it was just in his imagination. Yes, all in his head.

"Hiei-san?", a voice call out quickly,"Where are you?"
Hiei glared from his sleeping place(which is a tall sakura tree in the park), what is it now?! What with this girl?!,"Up here, baka neko! What do you want right now?! Some people are obviously sleeping at the moment, you know?!?!?!"
The girl laugh. Climbing up to the tree she sat down next to Hiei and offer him a bento she just bought,"'Baka neko?', be careful Hiei-san. If you don't be careful then I'll start to call you 'onichan' again"
Hiei grumble a bit and open the bento, inside was a few pieces of sushi and a few slices of sashimi. The hell? Who eat sushi at midnight? "Why are you in that form anyway? You look disgusting as a Nigen"
The girl laugh so hard that she almost choked on a slice of sashimi. "You may think so Hiei-san, but other Nigen are very atracted to me". The girl was in fact very beautiful by human standard. Her long mid night blue colored hair were now in two thick braids swaying to and fro as she laugh. Her eyes were light blue and seem to twinkle everytime she talk. She was wearing a standard high school uniform which was pink and socks that go all the way to mid thighs.
".......so you're meeting him tomorrow...?"Hiei ask suddenly.
The girl nod silently. The smile were soon lost on her lip as she stared at the moon above them.
"I'm sure he'll be glad to meet you"
"You think he remember?"
"Of course, if he don't I'll kick his ass for you"
"No thank you, Hiei-san"

"Ehh!!!! Kurama!!! Koenma got a new case for us!!!", Kuwabara shouted at the top of his lung as he arrived at Kurama's house.
"Shut up, you ass!! Shiori don't know her son as Kurama remember?!?!", Yusuke whispered while giving Kuwabara a quick jab in the rib.
"Itai......"
Yusuke sighed. The young spirit detective was sometime wondered to him self if dealing was Kuwabara was worth enough for the few time that he have save the team's butts.
Shiori smiled at the 2 high schooler as she open the door."Oh, you are Shuiichi's friends right? He been so anxious to see you 2 since yesterday".
"He have?", both Yusuke and Kuwabara exclaim at the same time.
As Yusuke and Kuwabara went up to Kurama's room, Yusuke whispered quietly,"I wonder what Kurama want to meet us for"
The red-head(aka Kuwabara) stared at Yusuke and replied,"Must be something really important"

Kurama was sitting quietly at his desk. Oh such troublesome homework! And why must they handing it out now?! During vacation infact. Suddenly, noises disapear all around him. Everything in his room went to a light gray. There was no sounds! None at all. Not even the footsteps of Kuwabara and Yusuke that he heard a while back when they were climbing onto his room.
"I been waiting for a long time Kurama"
"Who are you?", Kurama asked. One hand gently slipping to his hair for a seed just in case.
A figure appear in front of Kurama. A girl with blue braids to be exact. She look extremely hurt after Kurama said those words. "It doesn't really matter now, does it, Koibito?"
"Koi.....bito...?", Kurama repeated, confused.
"Hai, I am your and you are also mine", the girl giggle and lean toward to kiss Kurama.
"Yo Kur--Shuiichi!"
Kurama blinked. As the sound of the rude intrusion of Yusuke and Kuwabara boomed out behind him, the room seem to return to its normal stage and the girl have disappear. He frowned. Who was that girl? Koibito? She call him her koibito....
"Shuiichi.....?", Shiori ask gently as she try to shake one of her son's shoulder. Kurama blinked a few more time before turning to his mom to reassure that he was okay.
Yusuke glare at Kurama once Shiori was gone,"You're real mess right now you know. What happen?"
Kurama look at Yusuke for a while and shake his head,"Iie, it nothing".

"He.......didn't remember me....."
Hiei was forced not to roll his eye when the stupid neko went back sniffling. She had made few of the biggest mistake there could even be made.."Ack! Nekoi no baka! You moron, you just pop into a guys room in your human form after 18 years of being seperate from each other?"
The girl looked at Hiei sadly. "I miss him, Hiei-chan. I miss Youko-sama. I loved him. I gave myself to him. I was his mate...."
HIei sighed. Even after 18 years of knowing Nekoi Ko, there was a few moment where he wish he could somehow be more compasionate to her. She was alone in this world like him. He have no family. She have no friends. And in that fateful date in Makai 18 years before, they have met each other.
Nekoi was now in her human form. Since walking around in Nigenkai with cat ears and tails weren't really the greatest plan yet. She have adopted the identity of Shiro Bara in order to search for Kurama easier. Even though she have a human form, her gracefulness, her agility, her beauty of a youkai still shown through somehow.
Hiei had found his sister, Youkina now. But before he found her, Nekoi was always the resisdent "little sister". She would always call him "onichan" and Hiei would always call just call her neko.
"Baka nyanko.....", Hiei mumble as he reach foward and hug Nekoi. Nekoi stiffen. What the...? Hiei was not known to give people hugs. Actually, strike that, he was not known to give off any emotions at all.
".....Hiei-san?"
Hiei let go of the hug and look at her. Puzzle he ask, "What? Did I do this 'hug' thing wrong?".
Nekoi grin,"Nope, you did just right"
"Hn", was his replied. It was short. It was simple. Hell, its not even a word. But it explain all of his emotions. The emotions of the girl he have been treatng like his sister for the last 18 years.

"So we have to find this.......what the hell is it again, Urameshi?"
"Oh for the love of......we have to find this killer that is going around. Koenma said he got a thing for kitsune and neko youkai", Yusuke said impatiently. Almost 5 youkai got kill in the past few months. 2 of them were youkos like Kurama.
Kurama sat quietly. Something about this killer didn't make him very comfortable. Oh god, he could be the target. Or worse, his family in Nigenkai.
Kuwabara shake his head in a macho(-.-;; in his mind) fashion."I don't get it, Urameshi. Those youkos are pretty damn hard to kill. Take Kurama here for an example".
"I guess we're dealing with a really powerful demon this time then", Yusuke grin,"Good, I'm going to enjoy the chalenge".

Shizuru scowled. This was strange. This wasn't normal. Sure Nigenkai was visited by a few special demon that were granted permision by Koenma sometime. But surely, Koenma could not have let such a powerful, dark force to come here, could he?
"Shizuru-san? Are you okay? You look quite pale", the young Koorime ask gently as she saw Shizuru sitting there. Yukina was now living with Genkai to help her around the temple. She was still searching for her brother of course! He is around here somewhere! She just know it!
Shizuru smile and turn to the little Koorime,"Hai, its really quite alright. Don't worry about me much, ne?". She stood up and walk outside in the dark night to think. Whatever that was, it was probably here because of the Renkai Taten. Shizuru sniffed. Just a normal day for her. You usually get used to these once your otochan was a Spirit Detective for Koenma.
Becareful otochan. Don't make me come and save your pitiful ass again.

The nest morning, when the sun rised up and bathe everything in the soft and warm golden ray, Kurama was already sitting in the garden ever since 6 o'clock. He been sitting there in the garden thinking. It was extemely peaceful there. No human made sound. Only the sounds of the birds singing, the wind as it blow through his hair, the cracking of the brances. He have been sitting here musing for the past 2 hours. He know that to get to him, the killer will eventually find out about his family and get them as baits. How could he advoid the upcoming dangers for them?
"Shuiichi? Its time to go to school", Shiori smile as she step outside. She knew this was where he would be sitting. Of course, her son always go into the garden whenever he have time. It was one of the places Suiichi love the most.
Kurama sigh. He knew what he have to do now,"Mother, I was thinking maybe I should get my own place to live now"
Shiori blinked,"Why? What have happen Shuiichi? Don't you like it here".
"Yes very, but since I am 18 now and I am almost going to college, don't you think it be better if I have my own place to live? Most of all, its not like I'm going to be gone, I'll try to rent an apartment near here and will visit anytime I get",
Shiori smile gently," That would be no problem for me. I'll miss you though"
"I'll miss you too, okaasan"

"Students! Students! SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!", Ms. Kodoku scream. Shiro nervously inched away from the door a couple of step. This lady is scary(>.< Like my 5th grade teacher). Extremely scary infact! Its be probably good if she didn't go to her wrong side anytime soon.
Kurama sat in the back, obviously bored. He was into a very great book! Putting it down would be a very much shame. Most of all, it usually take about 5 minutes for the students to calm down, and by then Kurama could reach up to Chapter 5.
Ms Kodoku, who obviously have deal with this kind of torture a lot already just said above the noise,"Students! We have a new classmate with us today, her name is Shiro Bara". Shiro nervously step inside the classroom. Immediately, all of the noises stop. All the guys just start drooling and all the girls start to pull out their mirrors and look at themselves disapprovingly and sigh when they look up at her.
Shiro coughed nervously. So many Nigen! They are all looking at her!"Ohayo gozimasu, minna-san. Watashi wa Shiro Bara desu", Shiro said nervouly while bowing.
Ms.Kodoku smile. Finally! One more kid that is not a deliquent in this class. About time too. Even though Shuiichi MInamino could be the model for most of the students here, he could need some help."Bara-san, please take a seat next to Minamino-san please".
Shiro bow again and walk slowly to where her seat was. Among the way, her ear picked up a few conversation from the Nigen. They were all about her(o.o That usually be a good thing for me but >> yeah).
"Look at that ass!!"
"Oh my god! I wonder who her gym trainer is!"
"This girl will be mine by the end of the day"
"She is so pretty! So pretty!"
"Ughh....great, another one in the class....."
"She is not THAT perfect! Is she....?"
"Hello, are you Minamino-san?", Shiro ask as she stop to the empty table next to Kurama. Shiro tried to look normal as she wait for Kurama to look up. Her koibito! She have found him!
Kurama said without looking up,"Hai, I am". His voice were so far and cold and distant!
Shiro was hurting so much inside, she feel as if she could die from the heart ache alone. Her kareshi, her koibito, her itooshi, won't even give her a glance now. How could he do that to her? She have been searching for him for the last 18 years and now he won't even look at her? Have he forgotten her? Have he found a new love?
Kurama finally close the book and look at Shiro's face. He gasp. This was the girl that apear in his room yesterday! Was is just a considence? Or is it this girl have something to esplain about her presence.
Looking to see if anyone was listening to their conversation, Kurama whisper,"Meet me after school on the roof"

Over looking the school, a figure wearing a dark cloak smile, "Well well well, if it isn't my least faviorate couple. Don't worry you two, you will be together forever in the after life once I am finish".

"Who are you?", Kurama asked coldly.
Shiro look at him with her sapphire color eyes, she wanted so much to tell him! To tell him her feeling! To tell him about how she miss him.
In his hand now were the Rose Whip, cautiously, he walk closer to her and ask again,"Who are you? Tell me the truth"
Shiro back away. She tried to talk, but the words couldn't come out. Why won't the words come out!! She can't talk! What happen ?!
"Tell me who you are!", Kurama said, green eyes flashing,"You were the person who appeared in my room yesterday weren't you?! Are you one of the killers that Koenma was talking about?". Kurama didn't care if he sound strange. The words just came out by it self. Oh god, if this girl was one of the killer, then she might have already plan an attack on his family. She already knew where he have live anyway. The only way to be safe was to kill this girl.
Shiro stood there, unable to say anything.
Shiro close her eyes. Doing the normal routine that she always do when she is changing back into Nekoi. Whats this? Its not working? Doushite?! Why isn't it working?!
Powerless, wordless. She can't talk or change back to Nekoi. How is she going to convince Kurama that she isn't just a normal youkai out to kill his family?
Kurama was about to strike her with the Rose Whip, suddenly...

"Stop it, kitsune!", Hiei yelled, "I will not let you hurt this girl!". Hiei stood in front of Shiro, in hand was his katana, blocking the Rose Whip.
Kurama was suprise. Why was Hiei helping this person."Doushite?"
Hiei look at him for a bit, then back at Shiro. Then he look up to a distant roof, far way from the school. Through his jagan, he could see someone. That someone was just sitting there smiling, stroking her long blonde hair while playing with some strings.
The hell?! Strings?!
Hiei's gaze follow the strings and he found that they were wraped around Shiro! One was around her neck. Another was around her body and three of them were plunged into her back. Hiei glared at the person who were far off, she laugh and winked at him! The nerve of that....but before he could do anything to her, she disapear!
"Hiei!", Kurama yelled at him, snapping him out of his thought,"You did not answer me! Why shouldn't I kill this girl?"
"Ano...aishiteru, kitsune no baka", Shiro said after she finally was able to talk again. The dispearance of the blonde girl must have release whatever that was sealing of Shiro's speech and power. But what about the strings? They didn't disappear with her, but instead, they are now slowly creeping into Shiro's body.
Kurama looked at her. Still so very much confused about this situation.(-.-So is the author, where the hell IS this going?),"Who are you?"
Shiro smile. In the blinked of an eye, the cute blue headed Ningen was replace with a beautiful white hair youkai,"Nekoi Ko at your service".
"Nekoi...? You're.......here...", Kurama stamper. Nekoi was here with him. This wasn't a dream. Oh please, god, let it not be a dream.
"Kurama-sama....", Nekoi cried, running into his arm. This was what she have been searching for. This is what she have been waiting for 18 years.
Suddenly , Nekoi started to fall limp in his arm. Kurama look down at her, what was wrong? When he look down, the white of her whirt have been stain with bloods. Her whole back was cover with red liquids that was starting to even run down her tails.
"Hiei?! What is wrong with her?", Kurama asked urgently. This was not real! No....he finally found her..please...don't take her away again.

"Excelent, Rumi, excelent"

Kurama-sama! It hurt! It hurt so much! Please help me!
Kurama don't think his heart have ever races that fast before. He and Hiei decide to bring her to Genkai's temple to have her heal by Yukina. Nekoi start to whimper weakly "Please help me" and "Itai.." on the way. Kurama was carrying her so that her head was resting against his chest, and so her back was facing down. On the way, all of her blood seem to drip to the ground and leave a sort of track on the ground.
"Yukina! We need your help!", Kurama yelled loudly once he reach the temple.
The young Koorime step outside to greet him suddenly stop. She put her hand to her mouth when she saw how much blood there was."Put her in here, Kurama-san. Hiei-san could you please go get some bandages from Genkai please?"
Hiei jumped when he heard his name called by his little sister. He nod and start running inthe direction of Genkai's room.
"What happen, Kurama-san? Who is this girl? Is she your friend?", Yukina asked quickly once Kurama have set the whimpering youkai down.
"Hai, she is my friend. I don't know what happen, but she just fainted. And then her whole back was covered in blood",Kurama answer glumly. This was almost as painful for him as it was for Nekoi. Each whimper tug at his heart, each time her face schrunch in pain it was a slap to him. Soon, Hiei ran back with bandages and a basin of water.
Yukina started to take Nekoi's top off to bandage her. Hiei start to turn red and went into another room, Kurama started too but Yukina held him back."Kurama-san, I'm going to need your help, I know what happened to your friend and I know the antidote, but you'll have to supply the ingredient for the antidote".
Kurama blushed madly,"Ne?! Nani?! I can't stay here. She is....and....(^.^ Aww how sweet, Kura-chan)..."
Yukina cut him off,"Ne, this is not the time for arguement like this. She is in danger, what will it be, Kurama-san? Stay being a gentleman or save your friend's life?"
Kurama finally gave in, but blush madly the entire time. Yukina turned Nekoi over so that she was laying on her stomach, her back was now cleaned so that they could see were the bleeding was from, there were 3 holes in her back, each was growing larger and larger as time pass."Oh kami-sama", Yukina gasp. Kurama looked, this was one of the worse posion in Makai, it was very lucky that Nekoi was a high class demon or else she would have die the exact moment the posion went into her bloodstream. What could have given her the posion?
"Yukina, what is the ingredient for the antidote?"
Yukina nodded and pulled out a small bowl,"First we need a Locust leaf, a Makai White Lily.....and a drop of youko blood".
Kurama stared at her,"What was the last ingredient?"
Yukina squinted at a piece of paper saying the antidote,"A drop of youko blood." Kurama sigh, of all the. They just had to come up with this in it. A lot of Makai's remedy involve youko blood for some reason. Kurama pulled out 2 seeds from his hair, one contain a regular Nigen Locust and one contain a Makai White Lily plant. Concentrating his energy into these plants, the plants grew quickly and bust into flowers.
Yukina colect the leaf from the Locust and a flower from the Lily. After, she handed a small knife to Kurama,"Do you want to do it or should I, Kurama-san?".
Kurama smile softly,"Iie, I'll do it, don't worry". Kurama held the knife over his index finger and make a small cut. A single drop of blood fell upon the leaf and the flower. Yukina smile encouragely to Kurama and wrap all of these in bandages and put them on Nekoi's back then she excused herself and left, leaving Kurama sitting there with Nekoi. A few minute later, Nekoi woke up.
"Kurama.....sama?", Nekoi ask weakly.
Kurama smile. Bending over and giving her a small kiss on her left ear(^_^ Remember, she is a cat!=^._.^=)he replied,"Hai, its me. Daijobu?"
Nekoi nod,"I'm okay now......Kurama....why am I topless....?"
Kurama start blushing again, remembering that they had to take her top ofF in order to bandage her, even though the bandages have now covering all the "important" places, it was still very bad for a girl(or -.- demon girl) for that matter to be topless in front of a man.
Nekoi laugh. It was so strange seeing the human incanation of the great Youko Kurama so innocent."Ne? Its okay, Kurama. I don't mind that much", she said sheepishly, "Most of all, I only been waiting 18 years to find you".
Kurama looked at her,"18 years? You have been searching for me all that time?"
"Hai...all that time. I almost gave up hope, but when Hiei-san said that he know where you were about 5 years ago, I kept on searching".
"Hiei? You know Hiei?", Kurama ask. Wondering what does the little fire demon got to do with his Nekoi.
Nekoi laugh outloud at this point,"Ne? Being jelous now all of the sudden, you silly kitsune? Well, I need someone to talk to while you were here, posing as an infant".
Kurama frowned. Moving so that his face was almost touching her. He whisper lightly,"Do you still love me, Nekoi? Even if I have abandoned you for 18 years already? Even if I can't transform into Youko whenever I want now?"
Nekoi smile mischeviously. In the blink of an eye, she transform back into Shiro."Your logic have gotten dull, ne, Koibito. I don't care if you can't turn into Youko whenever you want. I want to stay with you. Forever. If you want, I'll even stay in my human form for you.". Shiro lean closer to Kurama and kiss him lightly.
"Aishiteru", Kurama whisper. wrapping his arm around his faviorate little youkai.
Shiro let herself fall in his embrace whispering, "Eien ni aishiteru"
