i pulled a girl out of a tree
and asked her if she could sit with me.

we sat, talked, walked, up, down a hill
we watched noon shadows standing still.

we ran and sang and played charades
brought bread and cheese and marmalade.

we watched a lake, under the moon
i kissed her, said i'd be leaving soon.

day i sang a farewell song
and said to write before too long

she looked for marks upon my face
marks to know me, through age to trace

when i left she said goodbye
tears were shining in her eyes

november came she wrote me well
when i would write her, i couldn't tell

i was young and troubled not to speak
the months went by the warmth fell weak

she never got a word from me
the girl i pulled out of a tree
