Leather FAQ
Why leather?
* It is durable
* It is comfortable (important in case of shoes)
* It is a natural product and has a status symbol attached to it.
It is easy to replicate the pattern of the animals using imitation printing. How can you find out? Well,
It costs money to leave the leather surface natural. The skin of the animal takes the pounding from a variety of external (weather, physical scratches etc) and internal (diseases) factors. The leather surface will have all these scratches and marks in its natural form.
A hide with less defects costs more than a hide with more defects in the market as the former is liked better. (No one likes a product with random pox marks!)
There is a varying degree of finishing (in many cases like painting) done on the surface to cover up the defects. The lower the quality of raw hide the higher the cover up and you end up with a not-so-natural looking surface.
You have seen only the How-s, if you are interested in the Why-s go to know more about different
types of leathers and for further information also read Making a Leather .
