South Sea Surety & Insurance Co., Inc. DILG, MMDA, Rotary announces “Search for Outstanding Metro Cleaning Aides”
The “Search for Outstanding Metro Cleaning Aides” was jointly announced by the DILG, MMDA and the Rotary Club of Biak-na-Bato at The Makati Business Forum last Thursday, Sept. 9. The Search is a joint project of the DILG, MMDA and the Rotary Club of Biak-na-Bato. Porfirio O. Belgica, Jr., assistant governor of the Rotary Int’l District 3780 and past president of the Rotary Club of Biak-na-Bato, and who is presently the committee chairman for the “Search for Outstanding Metro Aides” clarified that this year’s contest is open not only to street cleaners but also to estero clearers and structure clearers, as well. Awarding of winners will be on December 16, 2004 and the committee on awards intends to give cash prizes to the ten outstanding metro cleaning aides this year, aside from the trophy, scholarship, insurance and others prizes, Belgica said. Dr.
Liwanag Godinez, Director 3 of the Health Operations Center of the Metro
Manila Development Authority (MMDA), expressed her appreciation for the
inclusion of the clearers in this year’s se The structure clearers often face violent opposition and direct physical threat when they tear down business establishments and other structures. They do not only experience physical harm in the performance of their jobs, Godinez explained, but also mental and emotional anguish whenever they demolish the shanties of those who are poor like them. They suffer inwardly and in silence as they courageously carry out orders and implement the letter of the law, Godinez added. Belgica expressed his views at “The Makati Business Forum” last Sept. 9. The Forum is regularly held every Thursday between 9-11 AM at the Fiesta San Miguel Bar of Dusit Hotel Nikko, in Makati. Councilor Belgica also welcomes the idea of donating to GMA’s “Bayanihan Funds”, provided it is strictly done on a voluntary basis, and enjoins every citizen to support this endeavor to help strengthen the financial condition of the country, and augment the solution to its financial crisis. Belgica, however, abhors it if done with pressure, in a manner that would be compulsory. He also said that our country is experiencing a fiscal crisis, not because we do not have money but because the government has spent so much on matters it should not spend on. Government, Belgica said, has taken responsibility on almost everything, or shouldered expenses it should not shoulder, like education. “Religious
institutions should not be taxed; instead they have to take care of the
education of the children, because it is their duty to do so. They could
help the government a lot in this aspect,” Belgica emphasized.
