    2006 State of the Union Speech:


    For the first time in history, in 2006, the U.S. President mentioned nanotechnology in the State of the Union Address.

    ...I propose to double the federal commitment to the most critical basic research programs in the physical sciences over the next 10 years. This funding will support the work of America's most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology, supercomputing, and alternative energy sources...

    Interestingly, the Russian President did the same thing in 2006:

    ...Russia has the potential to become one of the leaders in the field of nanotechnology. This sector represents one of the most promising directions for energy conservation and for developing new elements, medical technology and robotics. I believe we must take rapid steps to draw up and adopt an effective programme in this field...
