Recap of July 25, 2002 Meeting

Our thanks to Stryker for providing a very interesting program. The Stryker Pain Pump provides a continuous infusion of local anesthetic (such as Bupivicaine or Marcaine), by placing a small catheter at the operative site. It may be in use for 2 to 3 days, but is sometimes used up to 10 days. It initially was used for orthopedic surgery (shoulders and knees), but surgeons are now finding more uses for the pain pump, for such surgeries as Ankle fusions and bunion surgery. The settings are locked and can not be adjusted, once started. There are several different sizes of pumps, depending on quantity of anesthetic to be provided. Stryker has a reimbursement service to help facilities with reimbursement issues.

Advantages of using the Stryker Pain Pump would be decreased need for narcotic pain medication, resulting in decreased side effects (i.e. constipation) and decreased length of hospital stay.
