During Prohibition, William Henry Purswell was a bootlegger. He made illegal whiskey from corn mash in a still. He was caught, convicted and sent to prison. He was encarcerated at a minimum security prison farm and escaped. He and his family moved to New York City to evade capture. After 14 years and during World War II, he wrote to the governer of Texas asking for a pardon on the bootlegging charge. He told the governer that he would turn himself in if that's what the governer wanted him to do, but that he had lived an honest life for those 14 years and that he was currently working in a shipyard repairing damaged warships and that if the governer agreed that this was important work in support of the war effort then he requested that he be pardoned, if not then he would turn himself in and serve his time. The Texas governer agreed and pardoned him.

I'm not sure who the "G." Purswell is, I thought at first it was William's brother Guy but the age is of and Guy is in the 1920 census in Texas.

In Montgomery County Texas Cemeteries, Vol. II, p. 72, there is a listing
for: PURSWELL, Isobelle 22 Nov. 1870-7 Jan. 1926.I believe Esobel was actually born in 1868, that's what she stated on the 1910 census and it also fits the other census data better. I've also seen her birth date as 1869. Her death certificate has the wrong name for her father and "unknown" for her mother's name. It was filled out by one of her sons. SLM
