Levicey Hough

From the notes of Tommie Jo Stapleton:

Levicey "Visie" (1828 MS - after 1870 TX) about 1852 married Andrew Jackson "Jack" WEST, son of Shadrack Nelson and Penelope (MOODY) WEST. When Levicey received the notice of the estate settlement, she gave power of attorney to her husband to handle the estate affairs for her. (Caldwell Parish, LA, Conveyances, 27 Feb 1857 Vol C:491, "Power of Attorney from Vicey West to her husband, Andrew J. West, on the estate of her father, Alfred HOUGH," LDS film #311891). A note of interest is that witnesses were N. S. CHAFFIN and Wade H. HOUGH, son of Needham HOUGH of NC, SC, GA, and AL. The four known WEST children were Mary Jane (1853); Napoleon B. (1855 LA - 1938TX); Dalmutha (1858 LA); and Robert (?1858 LA). Only Napoleon B. could be traced, and his only identified child was Lula B., who may have had a child named Effie COOK. (There is some indication that Vicey married a KELLY after Jack WEST died, but she was not found as a KELLY wife in 1880 nor 1900 in TX.)

Alfred Hough

ALFRED AND ??? HOUGH OF GA, AL, AND MS

Alfred HOUGH (1803/1808 GA or AL - possibly before 23 Aug 1856 and certainly before 30 May 1860) seems to have been the second son of Francis HOUGH of GA, AL, and MS. He and his brother Singleton were in Hinds Co, MS, in 1827 and 1828, then he was in Rankin Co for the 1830 census. In 1832, he was poll taxed in Wayne Co, MS; and his apparent father, Francis HOUGH, was taxed for property. This is the last record found for him before his brothers administered the Francis HOUGH estate in 1856. Then they more clearly administered the Alfred HOUGH estate in 1860. These estate records showed Alfred had four married daughters out of the state, two in AL and two in LA, in 1860. It seems he did move to LA for some time as one dau showed LA as state of birth. In 1850, there were three other HOUGH individuals who seem clearly to be grandchildren of Francis HOUGH of Wayne Co, most likely children of Alfred. As Alfred was not found in 1850, it is possible he died before that year. Or he may actually have died between 1856 and 1860.

a. (There is some indication that Vicey married a KELLY after Jack WEST died, but she was not found as a KELLY wife in 1880 nor 1900 in TX.)

b. Francis (c 1830 MS - 17 Feb 1863 TN in Confederate service) married Mary E. FEWAX (1834 MS - ), dau of John and Elizabeth (STRAHAN) FEWAX, by 1850 and lived in Jasper and Jones counties of MS. Ch included: Aletha E. (1851); Martha (1853); Mary (1854); Delia (1857); son A. (1858); and Rebecca. Aletha E. married Joseph H. SPICER, and moved to Jackson Co, MS. Perhaps the others moved south as well.

c. Nancy (1832 MS - ) in 1850 was in Scott Co, MS, with a George and Cassandra KEACHY. She may be the person who in Clarke Co on 22 Apr 1857 married Felix LEVY. Felix was found in 1866 in Jasper Co.

d. Thomas Everett Singleton (1833 MS - 2 Oct 1893 MS, drowned in Pascagoula River) in 1850 was in Scott Co, MS, with a GRAHAM family. In 1852 He married Jane Elizabeth HUTTO (1834 AL - after 1900, prob Jackson Co, MS) and later lived in Clarke and Jackson counties of MS. Children included George W.; Mary C.; Sarah; Thomas Martin; Millis F.; and daughter Cricket C. Jane HOUGH applied for a widow's pension in 1900, based on Thomas HOUGH's service as a blacksmith with Capt. HOSKIN's Battery, Miss. Light Artillery.

e. Aletha A. E. (24 Jul 1836 MS - before 1880, TX) by 1854 married to Wiley Preston GUINN (28 Dec 1832 AL - 9 May 1892 Cook Co, TX) and lived in Choctaw Co, AL in 1856 and 1860. GUINN included: Joanna F.(1854 AL - 1913 OK); Mary Jane (1857 AL - TX); Alfred Henry (1858 AL - 1945 TX); Wiley Franklin Baker (1862 - 1950); and John H. John H. died young, but the other four can be traced in Texas.

f. Saletha ( ) married ??? HARVILLE and lived in LA in 1856. She must have been an older daughter, but she could not be identified among the HARVILLE families of LA in 1850 nor 1860.

g. Josephine A. (1842 LA - ) must have been a younger dau. By 1856 she was married to Andrew SELLERS (1825 - ) and living in Choctaw Co, AL, next to her sister, Aletha GUINN. By 1860, the SELLERS children included Sarah J. (1855 AL) and John T. (1859 AL). They were not identified later.

h. Catherine Amanda (18 Sep 1854 MS - 1932 TX) was a fifteen year old in 1870 with a McIlwain family in Wayne County. About 1872, probably in Wayne Co, MS, she married William Taylor WILKINS (1848 - 1925 TX), and their WILKINS children were Obedience, Ida Nida Sarah Tobiatha, Arra Nettie, DeWitt, Travis Boss, and Jay B. and Hattie Ora Wilkins,

Hough lineage is Alfred and ??? of AL and MS; Francis and Unity ( ) of GA, AL, and MS; Samuel and Sarah ( ) of NC; GA; AL; and MS; prob. Samuel and Frances ( ) of Anson Co, NC; possibly Hough Quaker families from Cheshire, England, to Bucks Co, PA;

1856, Aug 23. Legal notice for Wayne Co in "The Eastern Clarion," Paulding, Jasper Co, MS, "Notice: Francis Hough, dec'd. Slaves: Peter, Lettie & Ned to be sold for division of Singleton Hough's estate. R. N. & A. G. Hough Executors. Also: Kate, Andrew & Mary Jane to be sold for division of Alfred Hough's estate." This establishes that old Francis, Singleton, and Alfred had died by 1856. Singleton had been alive in 1850, and Alfred had been alive in 1842 when his youngest known daughter was born.

1860, May 30, Legal Notice for Wayne County in "The Eastern Clarion," "Notice: Alfred Hough, dec'd. Richmond N. & Alhanan G. Hough, Admr. Though this notice is faded and barely readable, it seems to indicate heirs of Alfred Hough who did not live in the immediate area.
