In 1674, he appears listed in a tithable. In 1668, he appears as a witness, late this year. On 31 Dec 1687, he received 5,600 pounds of tobacco and nine head of cattle from his father. Occupation: Cooper. On 4 Mar 1683/84, he sold 50 acres at the head of Gray's Creek acquired in 1674. In 1691, he purchased land from Robert & Ann Warren. On 4 Jul 1691, his noncupative Will was proved by the oaths bequests to his daughter Elizabeth

Tim Lewis says Joel may have been adopted, and also that there is just enough uncertainty in his birth year that Margaret Jackson might be his mother. Another explanation is that Joel is the illegitimate child of Jacob Ott and a Revolutionary War camp follower. My guess is that he was Jacob's nephew, adopted after the death of his parents sometime between 1800 and 1810. The evidence for this, however, is only circumstantial; see my Ott Web page (http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Acropolis/4317/Ott.html) for the reasoning.
Joel lied extensively and inconsistently about his age (or perhaps didn't know) when asked by various census takers. He may have been born anywhere between 1782 and 1800. His marriage in 1814, however, suggests an upper bound of about 1795 for his birth year.
According to Ruth Ott Wallis, he lived in Mt Hermon LA until 1861, when he moved to Livingston Parish and settled near what is now Watson LA.

"Gasper Ott Jr." appears on the 1790 and 1800 censuses for Orangeburgh, South Carolina, and then disappears. He may have migrated westward, but it is more likely that both he and his wife died before the 1810 census. My guess is that Joel Ott is his son, and that he moved to Louisiana with (or at about the same time as) his uncle Jacob. But there is no proof of the identities of any of Caspar Jr's children.

Called Caspar Otth (or Oth) in Swiss records and in early Orangeburgh records in the German language; called Gasper or Jasper Ott in Orangeburgh records in English.
She was the mother of the first four of Caspar Ott's children, as recorded in the Giessendanner record, but it is not certain that she was the mother of the others. "Gasper Ott Sr." had two females in his household in the 1790 census, one of whom may have been Maria (or a later wife).
