VA.Excerpt from a book by Bill Bateman:
Stephen W. Bateman was born in Sumter County, South Carolina in 1814. He was the fourth of seven children and the second son of John Bateman and Martha Woodward. Stephen was in Barbour County, Alabama by 1833. He married Emily Elizabeth _______, presumably by 1836. Stephen and Emily had these children, all born in Barbour County except Mary, who was born in Georgia: Mary Louisa b. abt. 1837, William b. abt. 1839, Sarah b. abt. 1842, James R. b. abt. 1845, John Alexander b. 17 Jan. 1849, Emily b. abt. 1855, and (another) Sarah b. abt. 1860. Stephen farmed in southern Barbour County, about 14 miles southwest of Eufaula, until 1861 when he enlisted to serve in the War For Southern Independence.
Stephen enlisted for the duration of the War in (new) Company A, 5th Alabama Infantry, at Clayton on May 15, 1861. Presumably he joined up shortly thereafter with the regiment at Pensacola, where it had assembled between May 13 and 15. Pneumonia, diarrhea and measles broke out in the regiment at Pensacola and caused seven deaths out of 840 men in the regiment's nine companies. The regiment, except for Company K (Artillery) left Pensacola on June 2 and marched to Richmond, arriving there on June 9. (Company K was detached and left in Pensacola on orders of General Bragg.). The regiment left Richmond on June 18 and arrived at Manassas Junction on June 19. It left Manassas on June 22 and arrived at Farr's Cross Roads on June 23. Sick men were left behind at nearly every stopping point between Pensacola and Farr's Cross Roads. On July 17, part of the regiment was involved in a skirmish with Union forces at Farr's Cross Roads. The regiment camped at Union Mills Station on the night of July 17 and remained in that area until August 23, where it was plagued by typhoid fever and measles. The regiment remained in the vicinity of Manassas during the fall and winter. On the Company A muster roll for November and December, 1861, Stephen was listed as "absent - sick in hospital at Richmond". The War ended for Stephen, just about seven months after it had began, when he died on December 8, 1861, presumably in the hospital at Richmond. Emily Elizabeth applied for a Confederate Widow's Pension on December 27, 1862 and was awarded $20.00 per year.
Emily and various of her children continued to farm until at least 1880, and possibly until 1884 when she died. Several mortgages recorded at the courthouse in Clayton tell a sad tale of a hand-to-mouth existence. The family experienced the annual ritual of mortgaging their 120 acres, and in some years their livestock and even their not-yet-planted crop, to secure loans that ranged from $26.25 to $91.00, just to see them through the hoped-for harvesting of that year's crop. Emily died on September 12, 1884 and is buried in the cemetery behind the Pond Bethel Methodist Church.
Marriage and some family information is known for only two of Stephen and Emily's children. Mary Louisa Bateman married Gabriel Purswell January 14, 1864 in Barbour County. They had these children, all born in Dale County except the first: Mary Louisa born December 4, 1864, Daniel Gabriel born January 30, 1866, Martha Luiza born September 8, 1870, Zachariah J. born 1871, Nancy Catherine born January 10, 1873, Joseph L. born October 24, 1875, and John Benjamin born September 8, 1878. John Alexander Bateman married Florence Mahala McCarty August 6, 1871 in the Beaulah Church in Dale County. They had two sons born in Dale County, Clarence Lindon on June 25, 1872, and Anderson Green on July 4, 1876. John and his family migrated to Texas in about 1878, traveling in a wagon train with his brothers-in-law John Franklin McCarty, Robert Bruce McCarty, and Roscoe Philip McCarty and their widowed mother Ann Reddick McCarty and several others, all of Dale County. In Texas these children were born to John and Florence Bateman: James Franklin on September 12, 1879 in Palo Pinto County, Arthur Lee on May 9, 1881 in Palo Pinto County, Annie Eliza on June 28, 1884 in Mason County, Roscoe Philip on November 12, 1888 in Mason County, and Mary Elizabeth on November 5, 1892 in Comanche County. Descendants of John and Florence currently live in Texas, New Mexico, Kentucky, California and Missouri.

(cenus was taken in April so the "Infant" would be James Roscoe who was born in March 1910)
Don't know why he is listed as "James" J. instead of Zachariah, I would guess he may have been going by his middle name. Possibly the census taker asked him his name and he said "James", then later asked his middle initial.....? Who knows. This has to be him though.
