Samuel Gentry (1695-1789)
Samuel Gentry was born in 1695 in New Kent County, Virginia. His father, Nicholas Gentry, had immigrated from England in the 1670s. No record of Nicholas' marriage has been found so Samuel's mother can not be identified. The colonial records for New Kent County were destroyed by a fire in 1787 which was set by a John Price Posey. He was hung for the crime but that still leaves researchers without the information. Therefore, the marriage record of Samuel Gentry and others are also missing. In the late 1710s, Samuel and his brother, Nicholas, left the original family settlement on Totopotomoy's Creek in what was then lower Hanover County and settled in Upper Hanover County in the vicinity of Beech and Stone Horse Creeks. They then moved together farther up the Piedmont into what became Louisa County, Virginia. The first record of Samuel in Louisa County is when he patented 700 acres of land on July 30,1742. The land was on both sides of Dirty Swamp.
Samuel and his brother Nicholas are found in various Louisa County records in the 1740s. In 1744, the two petitioned the Louisa County court to designate a road that they had cleared as a public road. Beginning in 1747, Samuel started disposing of his 700 acres. In that year, he and Nicholas sold 125 acres to a Richard Walker; then in 1750, Samuel granted 88 acres to his son in-law, French Haggard; in 1752 John Gilbert bought 125 acres from Samuel and in 1753 he purchased another 144 acres. In all of these deeds, Samuel is shown as living in Fredrickville Parish, Louisa County, Virginia.
Then, in the Louisa County processioning return of 1756, Samuel is listed as a land owner but is not present and his brother Nicholas processions his land for him. Samuel and his sons David and Nicholas are then found in the records of Lunenburg County, Virginia. It is believed that Samuel remained in Lunenburg County for the rest of his life.
