Elisha William Glass (1796-1868) married (1) Jiney McKnight (1798-ca 1826) and (2) Mary Ann Wyatt (1811-1880), daughter of Samuel Wyatt and Sarah Ann Sheffield.
There have been many Glass family researchers, who have mistakenly listed Elisha William Glass as the son of Fredrick Glass and Elizabeth Strother <Strouthers/Strawder>. Elisha William Glass was in fact the son of William W. Glass Jr. and Sarah Hodges.
Jdg. Milner Echols clearly listed the children of William W. Glass Jr. in his History of the Echols Family in 1850:
According to Echols, William Glass first married Hally Shaw Lacy and had one son named Elijah Glass then he and wife parted. William Glass then married Sarah Hodges and they had 5 sons and 3 daughters. Echols lists their sons as Hubbard, Mason, Fredrick who married Betsy Strother and was killed by Indians in Alabama, David, and Elish.. Their daughters were Tabitha, Patsy, and Sally.
The fact that Milner Echols misspelled Manson as Mason and Elisha as Elish is irrelevant. There also was no mention of the son named Thomas M. Glass, that many have linked to William W. and Sarah (Hodges) Glass.
Further proof was supplied by John Busby. He was a descendant of Fredrick Glass and Elizabeth Strother. John unfortunately passed away in May of 2000, but he had located a family bible of this family. It clearly stated Fredrick's date of birth as 22 Sep 1785 and Elizabeth's as 11 Aug 1788. John was also adamant that the spelling was Fredrick, not Frederick. Fredrick was killed circa 1819, but Elizabeth later remarried and was listed in the 1835 Mississippi census as age 47. This census record substantiates her date of birth from the bible and also clearly eliminates the possibility that she could have been the mother of Elisha William Glass, unless she gave birth to him at age 8.
There also has been some controversy over the spelling of Jiney McKnight. Some say that it was Jincy or Jincey. Jiney was the spelling on their marriage license and also was the spelling of several of their female descendants.
This Elisha William Glass (1796-1868) must also not be confused with Elisha William Glass (1799-1851) who was the son of Dudley Glass.
I hope this information is of some use to the many Glass family researchers and helps to eliminate some of the confusion.
