Dudley Baker lost a child on the 12 (th) from what was thought to be
meningitis.(Dudley Davis Baker married Sarah T. Tabor, d/o Stephen Paris Tabor &
Eleanor Havens. Dudley Davis Baker, s/o James William Baker & Fannie
Ellis Baker. The only daughter of Dudley and Sallie Baker I have that I
have no marriage data for is an Alice J. Baker, b. Jan 1894-Does anyone
know if this was the daughter that died?).From an article in Clinch Valley News, Tazewell County, VA 1910:
Friday September 2, 1910
Mr. Dudley Davis Baker, of Abb’s Valley, was here on Wednesday, and pa’d
this office a pleasant visit. "Dud" looks as solemn as a judge, and he
has to, for he is in the saw mill business and there is no place for
foolishness about a saw mill. He is making dust and splinters fly at
Falls Mills.(Son of James William Baker & Fannie Ellis Baker. D. D. Baker married
Sarah T. Tabor, d/o Stepehen Paris Tabor & Eleanor Havens). The following is Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm:
TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Dudley D. Baker, 1 Jun 1922 ----¤¤¤---- Clinch Valley News"
Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday, June 9, 1922 TRAGIC DEATH OF D. D. BAKER ____ Boissevain Business Man Accidently Shoots Himself With Shot Gun-Inquest Held at Pocahontas DUDLEY D. BAKER, a well known citizen of this county and prominent business man of Boissevane (sic), met a tragic death last Thursday afternoon. He was killed instantly by the accidental discharge of a shot gun in his own hands. He was hunting, and in crossing a tram way he seemed to have, in some manner, just how will never be known, struck the hammer of his gun against something which caused the gun to fire. His entire right side of his head was torn away. He was subject, it is said, ta (sic) fainting spells, and he may have had one of the spells, and in falling, caused his gun to explode. The accident occurred about a mile from Boissevain, and 150 yards from the home of his son, James Baker. The remains were taken to Pocahontas , where an inquest was held, and the body prepared for burial. Funeral services were held in Boissevain, and also in Falls Mills, where interement (sic) was made, in charge of the Masonic fraternity. Besides a wife who was a MISS TABOR, before marriage, he leave (sic) a family of 8 children, all of whom are married except two daughters. His family have the deepest sympathy in their dire affliction, particularly his aged father, MR. JAMES W. BAKER, who made his home with his son. In this great sorrow which comes to him in his old age, he deserves and receives, the deepest sympathy of his friends. D. D. BAKER, was about 60 years of age, coming to Tazewell with his father’s family, from Louisa county where he was born, about 50 years ago (sic). He was a devoted churchman, a successful lumberman, and a man of unquestioned integrity. [D. D. Baker married Sarah T. ‘Sallie’ Tabor , d/o Stephen Paris Tabor & Eleanor ‘Ellen’ Havens. D. D. Baker’s father was James William Baker and his mother, Fannie Ellis (Baker) Baker. James W. Baker also lived in La Folette , TN., for a few years as he sent letters to the "Clinch Valley News," from that town, in 1916, 1917, and as late as December 20, 1918].
