Peter Field Archer

Peter had lived on 800 acres known as "Huntington" on Flat Creek in Amelia, which he had inherited from his father John Archer.

The source citation for his birth year is the document recorded when he was
21, and thus old enough to claim his inheritance as specified in his father's
will. It is known that he was born at Archer's Hall.
His will is dated 28 Aug 1828; prob. 18 Feb 1829 (d. 1829)
From Marriage bonds & Marriage Returns of Chesterfield County, VA, pg. 25
23 Jun 1787, Peter Field Archer and Elizabeth Walthall. Archibald
Walthall guardian of Elizabeth consents for her. This is consent only.
Md. 23 Jan (turns out that old transcription was mis-read, writing now
considered to be 23 June) 1787 (Chesterfield Co. Marriage Permits) Elizabeth
Walthall, dau of Wm. Walthall, Jr. of Roxdale, Chesterfield Co., VA, which she
inherited.
He had lived on 800 acres known as "Huntington" on Flat Creek in Amelia which
he had inherited from his father John Archer. He sold this in 1806 and bought
800 acres in Powhatan, known as "Springfield" from Carson Haskin of "Roxdale"
Chesterfield County, VA. This was known as "Springfield" due to the 14
springs on its 800 acres lying on the Appomattox River and Skinquarter Creek
then in Chesterfield and Powhatan Counties, later (Hennings Statutes) the
Powhatan boundary line was made Skinquarter Creek putting the land in Powhatan
county only.
While in Amelia, Peterfield Archer, 1795, (Hennings Statutes, Vol 14, p. 390)
was interested in the navigation of Appomattox River (Act passed 21 Dec) among
those listed as trustees for clearing, improving and extending the navigation
of the said river from Banisters Mills as far up the same as they may judge it
practicable, so as to have a sufficient depth and width of water to navigate
boats, batteaus of canoes capable of carring eight hogsheads of toabacco. On
17 May 1800 (Bk 21, p. 41) Richard Eggleston, Peter Field Archer, Daniel
Hardway, all of Amelia, gave bond to James Monroe, Gov. for $1200, to build
and keep in repair Jenito Bridge and Causeway over the Appomattox River until
17 May 1807. Then in Dec 1800 (Hennings, Vol 15, p. 259) Peterfield Archer
was one of those named as Trustees of Jefferson College, in the county of
Amelia. (His wife's family lived in Chesterfield across from the river and
this was the reason for interest in Jenito Bridge and why they moved to
Powhatan across the creek from the Osbornes).
Will of Peter Field Archer, Sr. of Powhatan Co., VA (Powhatan Co., VA Will
Book 8, p. 141) dated Aug 28, 1828 - probated 18 Feb 1829.I Peter Field Archer, Sen. of the County of Powhatan do make and declare
this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other wills by me made.
1st I give to my wife Nancy one third of my estate during her life.
2nd I give to my son William W. Archer one half of the tract of Land upon
which I now reside, lying on appomattox river, to be divided according to
quality and quantity, to him and his heirs.
3rd I give to my son Peter F. Archer, Jr. the other half of the said
tract of land to be divided in like manner to him and his heirs.
4th I give to my said sons Wm. W. Archer and Peter F. Archer, Jr. and to
my unmarried daughters, Mary A. Archer and Louisa C. Archer all the balance of
my estate of every description including my wife's portion at her death, to be
equally divided amongst them, making it obligatory upon my said sons to
furnish a home and comfortable subsistence for the said unmarried sisters so
long as they shall remain single intending that the proceeds of the property
given my said daughters shall be applied so far as it will go to their support
and that any deficiency shall be made up by my sons William and Peter.
Having made considerable advances to those of my children who have
heretofore married and these advances having been tendered and accepted (as
their receipts will show) in lieu of any claim against me as their guardian, I
confirm the same to them and their heirs.
Should my daughters M.A. Archer and Louisa C. Archer or either of them,
or their heirs, set up, make or demand in any way any claim against me or my
estate in consequence of my guardianship for them under the will of their
grandmother Mrs. Martha F. Osborne or make any claim against my estate for
money under any pretext whatsoever except under the foregoing provisions of
this will, I devise that in that event that they have, or the one so claiming
have no share or portion of my estate but the same go to my sons Peter F.
Archer, Jr. and William W. Archer whom I appoint executors of this my last
Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal
this 28th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
twenty-eight.
Peter F. Archer, Sen.
