Joseph W. Baker was born in 1839 in Louisa County, Virginia, to Alfred M. and Mildred Baker. When the Civil War began, he enlisted as a private in Company D, 13th Virginia Infantry 22 April 1861. He was promoted to sergeant 25 April 1862, and served in the medical corps from 28 March 1863 to 18 July 1864. After returning to his company, Baker was captured at the battle of Winchester 19 September 1864. Held as a prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland, Baker was released 6 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance. He returned to Louisa County, where he became a physician. Baker married Nannie B. Goodwin (b. 1853) of Louisa County 17 December 1884 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and they had five children. Baker died 14 March 1917 in Louisa County, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
