Matilda SHREIVES Dau S Female W 8 ROCK NC NC NCIn a letter dated November 19, 1955, Major T. Smith writes that this poem was written by "Uncle Billie Shreve after Grandpa's fourth and last wife had died. This poem lacks bits of information in cases where he tells about the marriages of the children, but it does not tell who a single one of them married. My mother was a daughter of the third wife and is the one named Rebecca. The mother of Clem's wife, Myrtle, is named Julina. The daughter named Matilda, by the last wife, is now living. She is the only survivor and will be 84 years the latter part of next January. Grandpa Shreve died the year I was born (1882) at the age of 76. My mother's mother was named Betty Summers and had two brothers, and she being the third wife, Grandpa had grown daughters, and two of them married a brother of this third wife.":
The year 18 & 6 brought Eld R. Shreve upon the shore
He lived single 22 years then married Delila Moore
They lived near by the Wolf Island waters
She bore him five sons & also five daughters
Mary Ann Vashtie was the first that was born
She is now married & has nine children of her own
The next that was born was Thomas D. Shreve
He died quite young leaving his parents to grieve
David L. was the third of the parsons little band
He died very young & never got to be a man
The next that was born they named James B
He died quite young as did Thomas D.
Francis M was the next that his mother gave birth
He died in his youth & was laid in the earth
Robt J. was the next that was brought to the two
He grew up to be a man then died in the war
The next that was born they called Martha E.
She was once married and her children number 3
Nannie L. was the next of the old parsons hive
She is now married and her children number 5
Sallie J was the next on the record I see
She is now married and her children number 3
Delilah was the last likes one being eleven
She died in infancy we hope she is in heaven
Now death called for the old parsons first wife
And separated them forever in this life
In a short time the old parson crossed Dan Rivers waters
And his second wife her name was Bettie Carter
The old parson was now as well fixed as a child with toys
She was also fruitful and bore him five boys
George W. was the first that give his delight
He was killed in the battle of the Wilderness fight
The next that was born they named John S
He grew up to be a man and he is now in the west
And in the west he will remain
He is in pursuit of a fortune that fortune Mattie Blane
William H. is the next so the record has said
He is now with his father at the old home sted
There was two others born by the parsons same dame
They died so young they never give them any name
Now the cold hand of death full of terror and gloom
Removed his second wife and consign her to the tomb
The parson took pity upon his motherless numbers
And married another Lady her name was Bettie Sumers
She also proved fruitful his number to advance
And bore him four daughters his fortune to enhance
Susan C was the first of his third wifes crew
She is now married and her children number two
Rebecca is the next and we are not yet done
She is also married and has one son
Julina is the next and the third of her Ma
She is yet single and living with her Pa
Christina is the next we shall have to record
She was removed from time in infancy by the hand of the Lord
Now the strong hand of death came once more great
And deprived the old parson of his dear loving mate
Several years elasped with war and mighty shocks
He married another lady her name was Sallie Cox
& gave the old parson joy in his latter days in the world
She bore him two boys and also one girl
The first by his last wife was named Robt Lee
He is as promising a little fellow as we generaly see
Clement Henry is the next his age is about six
He is a shrewd little fellow full of mischief and tricks
Matilda was the last a little black eyed girl
And she is the last he had borned in the world
The parson is again bereft in this life
Sallie is now dead and he is left without a wife
The old Gentle is yet able to labor at home and abroad
And fill up the mission he received of the Lord
