Blood Relations

Prologue

Duo walked through the frosty, empty streets, attempting to balance the two overfilled brown paper bags in his arms. He grumbled, violet eyes peering over the food that poked menacingly out. His long chestnut braid caught the wind and moved like a serpent, swaying back and forth, as he treaded through the fading sunlight.

“Why couldn’t Quatre have come with me?” he muttered, shifting the slipping bags once more. “I could’ve used his help carrying all this stuff, ya know. But, nooo! He had to spend time with Trowa! And Wu-man and his damn practice! He’s as bad as Heero with his laptop!”

He eyed the blue package that poked enticingly out, tempting him. He could already taste the chocolate cookies with their delicious sweet cream filling on his saliva-laden tongue.

“Because they made me do all the shopping by myself, I’m going to eat all the Oreo’s!” he mumbled. Just as he was about to stop walking and set down the bags so he could carry out his revenge, he bumped into something hard, sending him and his packages sprawling across the slippery ground.

“Oow!” he growled as he fell. He rubbed his head for a moment, then managed, “Why don’t ya look where ya going?”

He glanced up, his lavender orbs meeting a set of female amethyst eyes. The wind suddenly picked up, catching long chestnut waves and carrying them up, as if they possessed a life of their own, while unruly bangs licked the corners of her eyes. Her face was heart-shaped, young, smooth, unblemished. A long black leather trench coat hid the rest of her body while a black backpack hung from one shoulder.

His own face froze. “You look just like me,” he whispered.

“I’m so sorry,” she said, not hearing him. She dropped to her knees, quickly grabbing the fallen groceries and stuffing them into bags. Her black-gloved hands moved with grace and proficiency. “I’m such a clutz! I should really start looking at where I’m going! I can’t believe I ran into you like that!”

Duo reached over and grabbed her slim wrist, just as she dropped the Oreos into the bag. She glared at him, some harsh phase dancing on her lips, when she stopped and looked at him hard for the first time.

“You look like me,” she hissed.

He stared at her, eyes wide. His mouth had suddenly dried up, the thoughts of the food scattered everywhere the last thing on his confused mind.

“A-are you Duo Maxwell?” she whispered, her voice shaking slightly.

He tried to speak, but when no words issued forth, he nodded.

Her face went blank for a moment, then tears crept down her smooth cheeks. “I can’t believe it.”

“Who are you?” he asked at long last.

“I’m so sorry! I’m such an idiot!” she chastised. “I should have told you sooner. My name is Tesya Kement.

            “I’m your sister.”
