The Thin Line

( a Gundam Wing and Slayers crossover)

Chapter 4

“So, explain to us again on why we stopped,” Wufei growled.

“I was hungry,” Lina replied, shoveling food into her mouth.

“Quit complaining, Wu-man,” Duo chimed in between mouthfuls. “The food is pretty good and I was hungry too!”

Lina stopped for a moment and stared at the Deathscythe pilot. In annoyance, he had rebraided his hair, but still complained about the color. “You know, I think you inherited more than just Gourry’s hair.”

His amethyst eyes narrowed as he continued to thrust food into his gaping mouth. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Quatre sighed as his eyes toured the inn they had stopped at. It was a simple place, wooden tables and chairs, everything worn down and obviously used. The waiter had been nice enough, even though he raised an eyebrow at Heero’s new appearance. Heero had only coldly stared back, his hand subconsciously drifting to the place where his gun usually sat, only to once again, find it gone.

They knew they could not make it to Seyruun in one day and had opted to stay at the small village of Anadule for the night. There was no sense in walking around in the dark and most likely getting lost anyway. And besides, they were all hungry and tired.

His eyes drifted to Wufei, who sat coldly watching Duo and Lina fighting over a sausage and Heero who stared out a nearby window. Okay, so maybe not everyone was hungry.

Suddenly, Lina’s head snapped up, eyes wide and afraid. Everyone looked to her, concern rising. Duo stared at her with eyebrows raised and several spaghetti noodles hanging from his mouth.

“Something is coming,” she whispered, her face draining of all color. “Something horrible!”

Wufei jumped to his feet, happy to finally get some excitement in this rather boring and drab dimension. Heero cobalt eyes fell to the door while Quatre watched a nearby window. Duo stole a meatball from the frightened girl’s plate, and then stood up as well, facing the door.

            “What is it?” Wufei growled.

She shook her head. “I don’t know,” she hissed. “It’s just a feeling I have. It’s bad though, real bad.”

From off in the distance, the sound of some animal, a jackal or hyena perhaps, struck their ears. It was a primal noise, enough to raise the hair on everyone’s necks.

Lina’s face turned even whiter. “Please, not that! Anything but that!”

Everyone looked at her, confused. “What is it, Miss Lina?” Quatre asked, voice shaking slightly.

She opened her mouth to answer when the door suddenly flew open, banging against the wall. A tall figure stepped in, dressed (if you wish to call it that) in a skimpy leather black outfit that barely covered the bouncing basketballs of breasts. Large spiked mantles rested upon her shoulders while a long dark cloak flew out behind her. Her long black hair shimmered in the little light from inside the inn while her eyes sparkled with happiness.

“OHOHOHOHO!” she laughed, causing everyone to cringe.

“Oh my God!” yelled Duo. “What is that horrible sound?”

“Please, make it stop!” cried Quatre, tears leaking out of the corners of his soft blue eyes.

Wufei shuddered, attempting to be strong, and even Heero made a disgusted face.

            “Be quiet, woman!” screamed Wufei.

“OHOHO!” she continued, looking over at the table. She quickly did a double take upon seeing the crimson haired sorceress. “Lina? Is that you, Lina?”

Lina slid down into her chair, cheeks flaming red. Maybe I can hide underneath the table and she won’t find me. No, that only works with Gourry.

            “You know her?” asked Duo.

“It IS you!” the woman said, bouncing over to the table. Half the men in the room turned to watch her go, their eyes resting on a certain over-proportioned part of her female anatomy. She grabbed Lina’s arm and threw her to her feet, giving her a tight hug. “I can’t believe I found you here!”

“Just who are you, woman?” Wufei growled.

“’Woman?’” she replied, narrowing her eyes. “I’ll have you know that I am Naga, the Serpent, Lina’s greatest rival!”

“Do you have to tell everyone that?” Lina groaned, sitting back down. “You are not!”

“Well, what would you call me then?” Naga asked, raising an eyebrow.

Lina just shook her head. “Nope,” she muttered. “That’s just too easy.”

Naga pouted. “You’re so mean.” Her eyes fell onto the group. “So are you going to introduce me to your little friends here?”

Wufei hopped to his feet, fuming. “’Little friends’? Woman, you had better watch your tongue!”

“OHOHOHO! You are a feisty one!” she said.

Lina, sensing the growing tension, interjected a question. Anything to get her to stop laughing, she thought. “Why are you here, Naga?”

“I was traveling around and decided to stop at this inn for the night,” she answered.

“Lucky us,” Lina grumbled, knowing the others shared in her sentiments.

Again, Naga the Serpent pouted. “You know, you really pick on me too much.” She waved the bartender over, not noticing as he talked into her breasts rather than her face. She placed her usual alcoholic order and pulled up a chair beside the table. Wufei glowered as she sat down between Lina and him.

The bartender set down the immense mug of ale, blushing as she tipped him. Wufei rolled his dark eyes, muttering of how being subjected to this venomous female was unjust. Duo’s eyes went like magnets to her famous piece of anatomy.

He reached across the table, poking them with a finger. “Are those things real? They look like emergency floatation devices.”

“OHOHOHOHO!” she laughed as she struck his hand away. “Of course they’re real!”

Duo looked to Naga, then Lina, eyes connecting to their very different chest sizes. He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it quickly as he saw the familiar fireball leap into her hand. “Nevermind.”

In one deep drink, the ale was gone from Naga’s mug and she was calling for more. “So, what kind of treasure are you searching for now, Lina?” she inquired, raising a dark eyebrow.

“Nothing fun,” Lina hurriedly said, waving her hand with a weak smile dancing on her lips. “Nothing you would be interested.”

“Don’t underestimate the Great Naga,” she replied, tipping the bartender once more as he set her drink of the table. “Tell me of your plans!”

“We are going to find a way home for us,” Quatre said, a large sweet smile lying across his lips.

“Home?” she asked as she drank down her drink. Her eyes went to Lina, confused. Lina sighed, beginning the long tale.

“No matter how hard this wind

Tries to push me back
I recite a single spell and
Set the pace my own way.
Anyone who's jealous of my power
And my beauty won't get in the way
I won't flinch from any opponent
As my cape flaps in the breeze.
I want this, I want that
Hey, that's just how girls are
One slip and it's to hell you go
So you'd better not get in my way.”
Wufei growled, attempting to move away from the drunken singing idiots. Duo and Naga’s faces were flushed a deep red hue, their arms circled around one another’s shoulders as they swayed back and forth. At the top of their lungs, they belted out the tune, causing people to cringe almost as much as when she laughed.
His dark eyes roamed over to Quatre, noticing the light crimson burning his cheeks. He proved he was not much of a drinker, having only one glass of wine. Wufei shook his head, immediately regretting the drinking war the braided boy had waged with the large-breasted female.
“‘Far away, I'm going where I want to’,” the two intoxicants belted out. “‘Don't want this journey to end. Even the worst of days I end with a smile! Far away, embracing all the magic, I wanna go beyond this day, with my eyes on my dreams I keep walking on!’”
“You know a lot of good drinking songs there, Naga,” Duo managed to get out between drinks from the ale mug before him. “And, man do you have a great voice!”
“You’re not so bad yourself,” she returned, slapping him on the back.
Lina shook her head, crimson eyes rolled. “I didn’t know drinking made you deaf as well as dumb,” she muttered under her breath.
Duo’s glassy violet eyes turned to Wufei, slinging a free arm around his shoulders. “Come on, Wu-man! Join in!”
The dark-haired boy glared at the pilot, throwing his arm away. “No, Maxwell. And don’t call me that!”
“He’s touchy,” Naga slurred, leaning over to him. She thrust a mug of ale at him, grinning foolishly. “Have some of this. It will loosen you right up!”
Wufei turned his head. “Keep your devil drink to yourself!”
“You know,” she said, leaning over a little more as she ran a finger underneath his chin, “You are cute when you’re mad!”
Wufei jumped to his feet, eyes narrowed. “Woman, I would watch my tongue if I were you! This is completely unjust! I’m going to my room!”
“Party pooper,” Duo muttered, sticking out his tongue behind the other pilot’s back as he stalked off. Shrugging, he went back to singing with the woman at his side. “‘As far as I can, get along, try again!’”
Lina shook her head, fingers in her ears as she tried desperately to block out the screeching these people called singing. Once the song was over, she sighed, removing her fingers, eyes on Heero.
“Tomorrow we will reach Seyruun, you know,” she said.
His cobalt eyes turned to her, attempting to read her face. “And?”
“Well, a lot of people are, well, going to look at you, um, differently,” she muttered, cheeks turning slightly red. She had been contemplating all day on whether to have this talk with him, remembering how personally Zelgadis had taken his curse, not that she blamed him.
               “Hn.”
“I just want to make sure you’ll be all right with that sort of thing is all,” she said, slightly angered at his indifference.
His eyes leveled to her, cold and detached. She stopped, for a moment, recognizing the familiar gaze, considering it was the one she usually received from Zelgadis.
“I can handle myself.” His reply was brief and even, bearing no sign of emotion. The firelight within the inn struck the stones in his flesh and reflected them like diamonds.
She shrugged, turning her head. “Well, I’m glad. I don’t need you getting all upset because you can’t handle a couple weird looks.”
“I have been through worse,” he answered.
Duo reached a free arm around Heero, pulling the unyielding boy into a loose swing. “Come on, Heero! Sing with us!”
Dead azure eyes turned to the pilot, glaring at him. “Let me go.”
“You’re no fun, Heero!” Duo whined, lower lip sticking out slightly. “Have a drink! Come on, it’ll loosen ya up and help you forget about everything that’s happened.”
Placing his hands on the table, he pushed himself to his feet. Glaring through his dark, wire hair, he growled, “Shut up, Duo. I’m going to bed.” With that, he turned and walked up the stairs, leading to the rented rooms.
Naga looked at the longhaired boy, shrugging. “Are all your friends so grouchy?”
Duo shook his head, his braid flying as if it had a life of its own. “Nah, just most of them.” With a free hand, he pulled Quatre into a swing with him and Naga, swaying back and forth. “I know you’ll sing with us, won’t you Quatre?”
               “Well, I-”
“Great! One the count of three,” the braided boy began. “Three!”
Lina’s face drained of color and she bolted up the stairs as if a Dragon Slave was following close behind. In the near distance, she heard a group of three plainly intoxicated voices singing, obviously with no intentions of stopping anytime soon.
“‘Just wild beat communication,
Don’t be afraid of anything,
Because no one’s going to take away the shared feelings of now, our youth!
Just wild beat communication,
While being pounded by rain,
The hot thoughts never fade away,
I want to let it circulate, in my body, tonight!’
