Dr. William Lane Craig's testimony

I wasn’t raised in a Christian home or even a church-going family. But when I became a teenager, I began to ask the big questions in life and I started attending a church in our community by myself. But instead of answers to my questions, all I found was a social country club where the dues were a dollar a week in the offering plate. I was really turned off by the hypocrisy I saw there. I began to hate the people in the church, especially the other students who claimed to be Christians on Sunday, but lived for their real god the rest of the week, which was popularity.

This attitude began to spread towards other people as well – I thought everybody was a fake and a phony.

I was on my way to becoming a very alienated young man.

One day I walked into my high school German class, and sat down behind a girl who was one of these types who was always so happy it just makes you sick! I asked her why she was always so happy, and she told me it was because she knew Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. I said, ‘I go to church’, but she said, ‘that’s not enough. You need to have him living in your heart’. I said, ‘what would he want to do a thing like that for?’ She said, ‘because he loves you, Bill.’

That just hit me like a ton of bricks. Here I was, so filled with anger and hate towards other people, and there is somebody who really loved me – and who was it, but the God of the Universe.

That lit a fire in me. I began to read the New Testament, I met other Christians in the school, I went to Christian meetings and I read books. At the end of six months of the most agonising soul-searching I had ever gone through, I just came to the end of my rope and cried out to God. I gave my life to him, and experienced a wonderful infusion of joy and an overflowing sense of his presence.

I knew, having thought about this during those six months, that if I ever became a Christian, I could do nothing less than give my entire life to spreading this message among mankind. So my call to vocational Christian ministry was simultaneous with my conversion.
