Living Costs

Accomodation
The university will arrange for your accomodation while you are in Japan. The monthly rent is around 16.000 - 30.000 yen per person depending on where you live. You pay the rent to the university. Alternatively, you can also have it automatically deducted from your bank account.

Utility Bills
There are several ways to pay for utility bills (gas, water, electricity). You can either pay to the landlord (like I did), or you can pay to the bank or post office. The amount can vary greatly from 3.000 yen to 15.000 yen every month depending on how much you use them. Air conditioners usually consume a lot of electricity.

Food
Food is very expensive in Japan. One decent meal costs around 800 yen. Food in the school cafetaria is around 400 yen. It all depends on what kinds of meal you are used to eating everyday. You can also buy boxed lunch called bento in the supermarket. They also cost around 400 yen. If you are on a very tight budget you can buy these bentos after 8 pm in Fresta or Izumi (these are names of the closest supermarkets) you will get a discount, sometimes as much as 50%.

Transportation
You will probably live very near to the university, so you don't have to worry about daily transportation costs to and from school. Buses to the city is 250 or 280 yen one way depending from which bus stop you get in and get out. you can also take the JR local train from Shimo-Gion station to Hiroshima station for 200 yen.
