Today I was reminded that I was a man,
Alive, my body said, free, happy.
For so long I was dead to myself,
beat down by those around me.
Words, no sharp edges, yet able to cut deep
flew at me, finding their mark.
Words of hurt, pain, doubt,
all telling me no happiness.
But today, you said I was sweet,
that you cared for me.
You heard my story, yet you stayed,
I ran, but you drew me back.
You hugged me, not for money,
nor to use me.
But you hugged me, because.
Words like love, tenderness
they flowed from you.
Today I was told that I was a man.
