Prologue

    THE MITZVAH OF CHARITY

----The author believes that this history of Israel Bonds in Canada will stir a moment of nostalgia for the people who shaped the history or knew those who did. To further their ideals, he has requested that this book be available from synagogues and charitable institutions, exclusively.

----Half of sale price will be retained by the institution which will issue an appropriate tax deductible receipt. The balance will be used to purchase State of Israel Bonds, with at least 50% of these Bonds given to Israeli institutions like Tel Aviv University, Yad Vashem, Massuah, hospitals, Na Amat and Akim. A committee comprising Alex Grossman, Louise Cornblum and Alex Eisen of Toronto, and Rabbi Sidney Shoham, of Montreal, will establish the disposition of these gifts.

WHY THIS AND NOT THAT? WHY HIM AND NOT ME? WHY ME AND NOT HIM?

----Some will be critical for my including or not including them in the story, for minimizing their contribution, or overlooking a significant performance; for quoting incidents out of context or reminding them of a situation they would prefer to forget.

----The author did not create or fictionalize the situation and events. He was there and heard what those present heard. He did not include chapters of gossip, backstabbing and back slapping, tales of the rabbl's wife and friends, or the motivations and behaviour of the dedicated honourees and volunteer leaders. The people, dinners and speeches described are those that most impressed him.

----These were the hi-lites of Bonds as he saw them.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

----Many people encouraged and inspired the various chapters of this book. These include the Bond buyers of various denominations; the people of vision that originated the organization; the "Lay Leaders" who volunteered their time and influence; the Israeli, American and Canadian entertainers, speakers and government leaders who attracted and informed potential Bond buyers; and the professional executives and staffs employed in Canada, the United States and Israel. The author met thousands of these people, and is grateful for the opportunity of stimulating experiences. While time has erased many episodes, the following people remain vivid and vivacious in my thoughts. I sincerely thank them and those who have been overlooked.
