Finger Paint No. 1

3 tablespoons sugar
2 cups cold water
1/2 cup cornstarch
food coloring

Mix the first two ingredients and then add the water. Cook over a low heat, stirring constantly, until well blended. Divide the mixture into 4-5 portions and add a different food coloring to each, plus a pinch of detergent. The latter helps with clean-up.

Finger Paint No. 2

1/2 cup dry laundry starch
1/2 cup soap flakes
1/4 cup cold water
1 teaspoon glycerine
11/2 cups boiling water
food coloring

Mix starch and cold water in saucepan. Pour in the boiling water and cook over low heat till shiny. Remove from the heat and add soap and glycerine. Divide the portions and add different food coloring. VARIATION: Just beat warm water into Lux or Ivory Flakes till consistency desired and add paint or food coloring.

Pudding Finger Paint

Mix Instant Vanilla Pudding with water and powdered tempera paint, or mix instant chocolate pudding with water.

Home Made Finger Paint

1 quart boiling water
3 cups laundry starch
11/2 cup soap flakes
1/2 cup talcum powder
powdered tempra paint

Mix and have fun!

Clown Paint

1/4 teaspoon powdered tempra paint
1/8 cup baby lotion
1 squirt liquid dishwashing soap

Easily removed by soap and water.

Fun Playing With Jell-O

4 packages Jell-O
2 packages Knox Gelatin
(Dissolve in 2 cups of hot water)

Let set in refrigerator until firm. It's fun and will not melt!

Magic Goop

1 cup cornstarch

Add enough water so that the consistency is similar to glue. Tempra paint may be added for color.

Homemade "Silly Putty"

Mix well
2 parts white glue (Elmer's)
1 part Sta-Flo liquid starch

If it needs to dry a bit before it is "workable," it may be necessary to add a touch more glue or starch. Experiment. May not work well on humid day. Store in air-tight container.
NOTE: If you use Elmer's School Glue instead of regular white it doesn't bounce or pick up pictures, but it makes a gooey delight your kids will love. Use on a smooth surface.

Play-doh

4 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup salt
2 cups flour
2 cups water
4 teaspoons cream of tartar

Cook and stir over low heat until it reaches the right consistency. It will not get any firmer when cooled. Keeps a long time if kept stored covered in refrigerator.

Play-doh (no cooking recipe)

Mix
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon alum

Add a small amount of water at a time until ocnsistency of bread dough. It will not be more than 1/2 cup. Add food coloring-preferably to the water before mixing. Store in air-tight container or plastic bag.

Play Clay

1 cup table salt
1 cup water
2 cups flour
food coloring
4-6 drops oil of cloves or winter green

Mix salt, flour, water to consistency of heavy dough. Add oil and mix thoroughly. Add coloring and mix and store in air-tight plastic bag orjar.

Edible Clay

1/2 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup soft margarine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cupsugar
1 cup flour

Mix ingredients well and knead until smooth - then play.

Play-doh A-la Peanut Butter

Mix together
1 jar peanut butter (18 oz.)
6 tablespoons honey
non-fat dry milk or milk plus flour to the right consistency.
OPTIONAL: Cocoa or carob for chocolate flavor
Shape..... Decorate(raisins?) & Edible!

Clay Recipe For Christmas Ornaments (Oven drying)

Mix well in large bowl
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 teaspoon powdered alum
1 1/2 cups water

If too dry, work in tablespoon of water with hands. Dough can be colored by dividing it into several parts and kneading a drop or two of food coloring into each part. TO ROLL: Roll 1/8" thick on lightly flowed board. Cut with cookie cutters dipped in flour. Make a hole in the top 1/4" down, for hanging, by using the end of a plastic straw dipped in flour. Shave the dots of clay from the straw and press on as decorations.

Clay Recipe For "Cookie" Ornaments (Overnight-drying method)

Mix together
2 cups salt
2/3 cup water

Stir until it boils on stove. Add to the above mixture 1 cup cornstarch mixed with 1/2 cup cold water. Stir. If it doesn't get thick, set back on the stove. Use extra cornstarch on table and rolling pin. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Use straw for making hole at the top for hanging. Dry and decorate. Use paint, glitter, etc.
