Kid and Caboodle: Musings of a "Split-Shift" Mom

Lately I have been trying to think of ways to motivate myself to exercise more. I do get a bit of incidental exercise throughout the week as I run errands, take care of my son and clean parts of the house, but I really don't have any regular workout program. For a few months I did use the treadmill regularly as part of a weight-loss program, but since I reached my target weight in the fall and stopped being monitored closely by my doctor, I have slacked off.

I think the main problem for me with working out on the treadmill is that I find it extremely boring. I would much prefer to dance, ice skate or go bowling. Given my work and family responsibilities, though, how could I find time to engage in such activities? Would it be possible to take my 4-year-old son with me to a skating rink or bowling alley on my days off? Would he behave if I signed us up for a "Mommy and Me" dance class? Or would my husband be willing to sacrifice some of his precious leisure hours every weekend so I could go dance, skate, or bowl on my own?

Perhaps I could fit in exercise during the days I am in the office. I work several blocks away from an outdoor ice-skating rink. Would it be possible to go skating every morning before I start work? Since I work in Washington, D.C., perhaps I should look at a monument or tour a museum during my lunch breaks. Alternatively, I could go to a nearby mall and window shop ....

How do you fit exercise into a busy schedule?
