Everyone
deserves an
Award!
And needs it too.

Valley's "Warm Fuzzy" gives members a way to bestow recognition upon a member who helped make the morning and the meeting special!

The District 3 theme for 1996-97 "Spark Your Passion for Eloquence" includes the "spark" idea and the District Governor, Terri Sparks, DTM, has provided spark pins for use as an award.

Everyone deserves an award.  Even those who may not believe they do.

Studies has shown that people learn better when they are having fun. Therefore, it is not surprising more than a dozen different "awards" have been created by resourceful Toastmasters.

Once a club gets past "best speaker,   evaluator, and table topics,"   the award ideas can become very creative. Some are self explanatory, such as the "Spark Plug" and "Blah" awards.

The "Zapper," used at Paradise Valley, is a variation of the spark plug idea. Others recognize good performance such Sunrise's "Best Functionary" and "Enthusiasm" awards.

Then there are the ones designed to suggest an area of improvement while taking the sting out of the experience; the "Ah," "Boner," and "Cliche`," awards fit this category.

To discourage members from speaking at great length about nothing (in any function), Central Toastmaster presented a "Hot Air" award.

A member of Voice of Motorola, shows off the club's "Ah Award." The wooden lettering is applied to clear plastic and when viewed from the back boldly reads: "HA," which is why Bill claims he wins it frequently---he keeps the other members laughing.

One morning, as I headed for the office following a Toastmasters meeting, I noticed I felt "up" for the day. I had won one of the small, insignificiant awards that morning and---surprisingly---it was the cause of my "up-ness."

That morning I realized, we need the benefit provided by small awards, pat-on-the-backs, little signs of appreciation---everyday.

Little awards can make a big difference in the life of a day.
