EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
ADDED TO MONTHLY SCHEDULE

Educational Vice President Irene Majava, CTM, says she sees value in adding an educational program to the monthly assignment schedule every four to six weeks.

In December, the assignment idea was fulfilled by Wayne Church, ATM-Silver, who presented on the proper use of audio-visual equipment following an advanced manual speech. He met all objectives.

His main purpose was to keep the group alive and add interest and excitement to the presentation. He shared various techniques to keep an audience awake and increase its retention of the message.

Wayne's most powerful expression occurred when he slammed an egg on a cookie sheet to vividly explain how the head of motorcyclist would appear in an accident without a helmet.

Wayne has also learned the value of using small magnetic cars on a white board in his defensive driving classes. His use of props for the session was endless.

In doing the Table Topics portion of the meeting, Kathryn De Bano-Rhodes, CTM, incorporated those props into her segment.

The magnetic cars and white board were used effectively by Robert Zakian, CTM, when he was asked to show his route on Christmas Eve. The use of props gave everyone a clear picture of Robert's Christmas Eve plans.

EVALUATION SPEECH CONTEST
February 6, 1997

Providing an evaluation in a contest is a little different than in the regualar meeting (definition of "little": Big.) The pressure to perform is present! It's a great communication learning method for those who want to improve.

And do we have people who
do want to improve.
In a hurry!

Look+ at the members in the
line for improvement.

Dan Barnard

You have to admire Dan.
Ten years ago this function was known as the Model Speaker. Five years ago it became the Demonstation Speaker.
Target speaker? Makes you wonder how many will be looking at you through crosshairs.

TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL
SPRING SPEECH CONTEST

It’s Spring Speech Contest time! It’s time to wrap up all you’ve learned during your membership into one effort - a showcase of your growth and potential.

If you’re inclined to “cordially decline” remember the axiom:

“If you do what you would rather not do, then what you would rather not do will soon no longer be what you would rather not do because you did what you would rather not do?”

(Is it possible that the Nike ad slogan was boiled down to three words from this wise old saying? It is a wise old saying, isn’t it?).

Focus on how you will benefit!

You’ll have succesfully put together another speech It may very well be the best you’ve done todate.

  • You’re friends will be proud of you. (You did what they didn’t want to do.)

You’ll be proud of yourself.
Once again, you’ll remind yourself of a truth:
One can not learn to speak in public without speaking in public.”
(the Toastmaster book adds:
“At every chance you get.”)

You’ll be able to do a “Top Ten list for Letterman” on why you entered Valley Toastmasters Spring Speech Contest.”

In fact Larry and Jacqueline have already done a Top Five:
