Germans in
Yugoslavia
- There were only 8,712 Germans in Yugoslavia in the
1981 census (down from 55,000 in the 1948 census). There
were two main distinct German groups in old Yugoslavia:
the small minority of Gotschee Germans, in Slovenia (see
in another page), speaking a
Bavarian dialect; and the Germans of the Danube Basin,
the Danube Swabians or Donauschwaben, loctated in
settlements of Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia (Yugoslavia).
The Croat-Serb war and the Bosnian war of the 1990's have
probably strongly diminished the German communities.
Today, there are probably no Germans in Bosnia (see
small list of old settlements), and
very few in Serbia (present-day
Yugoslavia) and Croatia.
