Koryak
The Koryak language, spoken by some 4,000 people, is part
of the Chukotko-Kamchatkan family. Koryak proper is quite
close to Chukchi, and, in turn, a couple of dialects (Alutor
or Nymylan and Kerek), are considered separate languages by
some linguists. The standard dialectal form used in radio
emissions is called Chavchuven, and the correct
self-designation for that is Chawchvajejyl. The Koryak
Autonomous Region (Okrug) is located in the northern part of
the penninsula of Kamtchatka. Population: 35,000 people, and
only 20% are Koryak. Russians and Ukrainians make up over
75% of the total. The rest are other native groups: Chukchi,
Itel'men, and Even. The capital is Palana.
