New Guinea
In New Guinea and adjacent islands some one thousand
languages are spoken. Nearly 80% of them area Papuan, and
20% Melanesian, of the great Austronesian language family.
Most of these languages have always been "minority"
languages, as they were spoken by not very big communities,
which did not mean that they were endangered. Modern life,
however, is beginning to disrupt old ways of language
transmission and now there are plenty of endangered
languages in New Guinea. Moreover New Guinea is divided
between Irian Jaya, the western part occupied and colonised
by Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, an independent country
in the western part of the territory.

Ginea
Berria
Ginea Berrian eta inguruko uharteetan mila bat hizkuntza
mintzatzen dira. %80 inguru Papuarrak dira, eta gainerakoak
Melanesiarrak, hizkuntza familia Austronesiar handikoak.
"Gutxiengo hizkuntzak" izan dira haietarik gehienak, oso
hiztun gutxi izan dituzten zentzuan, baina ez ziren
arriskuan zeuden hizkuntzak bakoitzak bere lurra,
transmisioa eta kultura zeukalako. Bizitza modernoa egoera
desorekatzen hasia da, hala ere, eta egun arriskuan diren
hizkuntza asko daude han. Ginea Berria zatituta dago,
bestetik. Mendebaldea (Irian Jaya) Indonesiak okupatzen eta
kolonizatzen du egun. Ekialdean, Papua Ginea Berria, estatu
independentea da.
