Thrace

Thrace is a region that comprises part of south Bulgaria, northeast Greece (this is Western Thrace) and the European side of Turkey (Eastern Thrace). It's just that corner of Europe that ends in Istanbul. Greece and Turkey were much more multiethnic in the past than they are now. In 1923 there was an enormous the Greek-Turkish population exchange. In Anatolia, no more Greeks live since that, but in Istanbul the Greek community remained, as well as the Turkish of Western Thrace (in Greece).

Trazia

Trazia Europako ekialdean Istanbulen amaitzen den mutur hori da. Berez, Bulgaria hegoaldea, Grezia ipar-ekialdea eta Turkiaren zati europarra hartzen ditu. Turkish in Greece

In Western Thrace (under Greece), there are still some 92,000 Turkish speakers. Greek is gradually supplanting Turkish as the language of instruction even in Muslim schools. Most Thracian Muslims are of Turkish ancestry and speak Turkish. The Pomak people (some 27,000), a Muslim group speaking a Bulgarian dialect, are concentrated along the border with Bulgaria. There is also a small group of sedentary Gypsies who speak Romany and Turkish.

Greek in Turkey

The size of the Greek minority in Turkey has decreased, or dwindled considerably in the last 45 years, primarily due to the discriminatory and often oppressive policies of the Turkish State against them. Today there are about 3,000 Greeks left. Most of them live in Istanbul. There are two small communities on the islands of Gokceada (1,000 people) and Bozcaada (less than 100) in the Aegean. These 3 communities speak distinct dialects. We have 3 placename lists, one for several placenames, other for Greek neighborhoods in Istanbul, and the 3rd one for some cities that prior to 1923 were populated by greeks.

 

Other distinct communities are those of the Muslim Greeks of the Pontis (see below).

Grekera Turkian

Azken 45 urteotan, Turkiako komunitate greziarra asko gutxitu da, Turkiako estatuaren diskriminazioaren presioaren pean. Gaur egunean 3.000 greziar inguru geratzen dira, haietarik gehienak Istanbulen. Beste bi komunitate daude Gokceada (1.000 lagun) and Bozcaada (100 eskas) uharteetan. Muslim Greeks of Turkey

Besides the mainstream Orthodox Christian Greeks, there are more Greek speakers in Turkey, although there is not probably ethnic consciousness among them: these are the Muslim Greeks of Turkey, who are dividid in two groups: the Muslim Greek refugees coming from Crete called Cretans, and the Muslim Pontic Greeks of the Black Sea or Pontus. The integration of Muslim Greeks among mainstream Turkish culture seems certain, given the strong anti-Greek sentiments running high in Turkey.

Pontus Muslim Greek

The largest group speaking Pontic Greek lives in 5-6 villages around Trabzon and in nearly 50 villages at the valley 'Yukari Solakli' that is south of Of. There's no satisfactory research made on the Pontus Muslim Greeks. They speak Greak and carry on Greek traditions but they refuse to be accepted in an ethnic group other than the Turks. They call themsevels 'Turkos' and their language as 'Romaika', a dialect of old Capadocian Greek, a variety once spoken in Anatolia but now probably extinct in Turkey. The Pontic Muslim Greeks consider the real Greeks as a seperate race and call them as 'Oromeos'. Their population is estimated between 200.000-300.000. In this same area, another minority lives, the Laz people.
