Many students come in for an entrance interview with the idea they can skate through our program. The fact is, yes, we do not have homework, but we do a lot more work in class than your average student would have to do. I have Middle School students who are several levels below their regular school counterparts that are taught the basics of the core subjects. They have no electives, cannot participate in regular Middle chool functions (sports, dances, etc.) without special permission from program administration. Permission is only granted when that student is passing in all classes and has maintained a high level of attendance. (10 unexcused absences get you kicked ou of the program.) Unfourtunately, the Middle School administration sees our program as a way to get rid of their trouble makers. As we return more of these kids to the regular classroom with the skills they were lacking we are slowly winning them over t the fact the program is for any student who cannot cope with a traditional class setting due to low skill levels. I hope there will be a return to teaching the basic skills to kids and forget about some of the extra "frill" type classes that have sprung up in the last several years.
