Simon's Home Page

This is my home page, which I will be using to put up reviews of books as I read them. The collection now contains over 1100 reviews of books of all kinds - fiction (particularly science fiction and crime fiction) and non-fiction (particularly science, history, music and literature).

Announcement, 4 October 2009: Yahoo have announced the closure of the Geocities service on 26 October. I have been moving files to a PBWiki here. So far, about 300 of the 1400 or so reviews have been moved, and I am moving about 20 more per week.

Announcement, 11 November 2006: Since blogging became popular, I've realised that this site is basically a blog: so I'm now going to start keeping new updates as a blog here. This might encourage me to make entries more frequently: from one a day, the rate has gone down to less than one a month.

The site has now had over 3/4 million visitors (according to Geocities stats, which don't go back to the beginning of the site), so I don't want to just abandon it. So I'll be updating the review listings with links to the blog as I post them.

Announcement, 26 February 2002: I've decided that after four years and over 1000 reviews, it's time to give up adding to this site and move on. It's been enjoyable to do most of the time, but writing something about all of the books that I read is starting to feel more like a chore. I may update the site occasionally, if I have a book that I particularly want to say something about.

The following is such a wonderful review that I feel I have to quote it. It's Field and Stream magazine reviewing Lady Chatterley's Lover, as quoted in John D. Barrow's The Universe That Discovered Itself:

This pictorial account of the day-by-day life of an English gamekeeper is full of considerable interest to outdoor-minded readers, as it contains many passages on pheasant raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways to control vermin, and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper.Unfortunately, one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous material in order to discover and savour these sidelights on the management of a midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion the book cannot take the place of J.R. Miller's Practical Gamekeeping.

Having received a fair amount of unsolicited e-mail, I'm removing the mailto link from this page. If you have a Javascript compatible Web browser, you should still be able to send e-mail via this link. Otherwise, if you look at the HTML source for the page (control-U in Netscape), you should be able to work it out.
