Educational Goals:
Students will demonstrate that they can summarize, paraphrase, and cite academic research (without plagiarizing) using correct APA format.
Instructions for Readings:
1. Students may make their own copy of a copyrighted chapter for educational purposes without infringing the author's copyright and without paying copyright fees (thus making their self-copying cheaper).
2. Check out for one hour and photocopy (1) Dr. Ronald Siegel's article "Sheila and the Swastikas" from Chapter 8 of his book "Fire in the Brain" and (2) Michael Harner's article "The Role of Hallucinogenic Plants in European Witchcraft" which is in a manila folder in the instructor's mailbox. There are photocopiers on the third floor and also an inexpensive copy center at Paradigm Resources in the Dinkydome.
Part One: Read "Sheila and the Swastikas" which is chapter 8 from Dr. Ronald Siegel's book "Fire in the Brain." In no more than one and one half pages and using minimal or no direct quotations (and without plagiarizing) summarize the following topic in the following way.
Write an explanation with clearly defined terms for a Middle School (Junior High School) audience i.e. that a Middle School student could understand, indicating how the combination of sleep deprivation and caffeine can cause a person to hallucinate and see culturally interpreted entoptic phenomena while apparently "awake." Use Dr. Siegel's case study called "Sheila and the Swastikas" to define and illustrate what a "Stage 1" hallucination is and the difficulties of clinically diagnosing or detecting one. Use APA citation format (see p. 695 of the Longman textbook).
Part Two: Read Michael Harner's article "The Role of Hallucinogenic Plants in European Witchcraft." In no more than one and one half pages and using minimal or no direct quotations (and without plagiarizing) summarize the following topic in the following way.
Write an explanation with clearly defined terms for a college-aged audience indicating how ingestion of hallucinogenic plants (many of which are commonly found weeds) can cause a stage 3 hallucination involving "flying" and "lycanthropy." Use Michael Harner's historical research on the connection between European witchcraft, lycanthropy, and hallucinogenic plants to define and illustrate this with a concrete example. Use APA citation format.
