The English Department Student Writing Center 306B Lind Hall (625-1893)

The SWC provides writing help for any undergraduate student. The center is staffed by

Graduate Assistants who also teach Composition courses, Teaching Specialists who

specialize in English as second language teaching (and teach Composition courses), and

Peer Tutors. The Student Writing Center has extensive walk-in hours every week, when

students may drop by to see a tutor without an appointment. Students, instructors, or

advisers may also request a weekly appointment for a student. The Center also has

computers which students can use for writing assignments, internet research, and

internet-based library research. The Student Writing Center acknowledges the generous

support of the CLA Information Technology Fees Committee and the Technology

Enhanced Learning.

The Department of Rhetoric's Online Writing Center

At the Department of Rhetoric's Online Writing Center, both graduate and undergraduate

students can receive personalized tutoring over the Internet from trained peer and

graduate writing tutors. Online chat sessions with Rhetoric tutors can also be arranged by

appointment for more indepth questions or concerns. In addition to e-mail tutoring and

The Grammar Oracle (an e-mail grammar hotline), the OWC contains both handouts and

interactive skills exercises to help students improve their writing. The OWC is an

interdisciplinary center, especially designed for questions about writing in the sciences or

technology. Moreover, in accordance with University Technology Enhanced Learning

initiatives, the OWC supports distance-learning students whose physical locale may

prevent their coming to campus for face-to-face tutoring.
