12-1-97Thanksgiving is a pretty worthless holiday. What is being celebrated? The accidental discovery of this piece of land? The "white man's" need to conquer and pillage and plunder everything in sight? The massacre of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans? Someone please fill me in on why we celebrate this holiday...and I don't want to hear any crap about we do it to remind ourselves once a year of what we should appreciate in our lives because we don't need pilgrim hats and Native American head-dresses for our kids to do it!

This year, I went to Las Vegas with my parents to my Aunt and Uncle's house for a big Thanksgiving dinner. There were five other kids there and we all averaged about the same age. After dinner, we were all tremendously bored and one of the girls suggested we go to GameWorksİ for a few hours. The parents reluctantly agreed and some of the kids got curfus (spelling?), but I didn't. So, instead of practicing a "traditional" Thanksgiving, we all played arcade games for 2 hours and then went back to two girls' hotel room until midnight. Throughout the evening, we all kept saying that it didn't feel like Thanksgiving. I personally was glad that it didn't because it is a pointless holiday that is only used to give students another few days off from school, and long distance family an excuse to visit.
