It's Time to Celebrate by Pierson Blaetz
The Alumni and Friends of Fairfax High School are now working on the celebration party of the 75th Anniversary of Fairfax High School to be held on May 22, 1999. The one day party includes day and evening activities revolving around the theme "The Many Faces of Fairfax."

The event will celebrate the diversity of Fairfax High School, Fairfax Adult School, and the surrounding community. Fairfax is an international school with over thirty languages spoken. The history of Fairfax High School is the history of Los Angeles - communities in a constant state of change demanding from its citizens an open minded attitude and recognition of the benefits and challenges of living within a diverse community.

Diamond75 We are encouraging alumni and the surrounding community to join us for both the day and evening events. The daytime festivities (10 am to 6 pm) include a Street Arts Festival, Taste of Fairfax, a Youth & Adult Job Fair with workshops, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AND MUSIC, a FREE 4-hour Bright Start Parenting & Literacy Workshop by Healthy Gente, Children's Activity Area and a GIANT REUNION of all the classes who attended Fairfax. The Reunion will be from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Entrance to the Daytime Event is FREE and open to the public. MORE INFORMATION BELOW !!!
Daytime Program
There will be over 75 Street Arts Festival Booths.

8:30 am to 12:30 pm Bright Start Parenting Workshop in the Cafeteria (see article - this page)

Express Photo Services will be at the Reunion Area to take photos of alumni with long lost friends. The photos will be framed in a beautiful keepsake folder. 5 X 7 = $5, 8 X 10 = $10.

The 75th Anniversary Program Book will be on sale for $5. The Program Book will include highlights of Fairfax's Diamond Jubilee and also the history of Fairfax with quotes and photographs taken through the years.

75th Anniversary T-Shirts available with 2 different designs will also be on sale for $15-20 (see the article on the T-Shirt Contest - this page).

10 am to 12 pm Radio Station Power 106 will have their music jeep and giveaways will be in the Job Fair Area.

3 to 4 pm Radio Station KGLH will be in the Corporate Area.

Evening Program
The evening program will begin in Swan Auditorium at 7:00 pm and will include a reception and catered buffet dinner, fabulous LIVE entertainment, unveiling of a special watercolor of the auditorium, and inductions into the Fairfax Hall of Fame. The evening show will begin approx. at 8:00 PM.

Actor Byron Allen will host the evening program which includes a Tribute to the song writing team of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller with musical numbers from the hit Broadway show "Smoky Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller" sung by Broadway stage performer Reva Rice. Also performing will be the Los Angeles Mandolin Orchestra, L.A.'s hottest band, Ozomatli, classical pianist Daniel Pollack and the Fairfax Cheerleaders, Band, Choir and Drama Departments.

Also on the program are the inductions of the honorees into the Fairfax Hall of Fame, the unveiling of the watercolor painting of the historic auditorium by actress/artist Kellye Nakahara Wallett (best known in her role as Nurse Kellye on M*A*S*H for 11 years) and special greetings from honored guests.

Youth & Adult Job Fair and Workshops
fairfax lion Major corporations are being invited from diverse industries to offer summer, part time work and career positions for Youths and Adults. Anyone living in Southern CA is invited to participate in looking for work at this Job Fair.

Job Search Workshops are also being provided by several career centers. These workshops, being held in the Conference Room will provide participants the tools to prepare a dynamite resume and to receive valuable tips and resources on their job search or career development.

Companies participating in the job fair are: California Highway Patrol, US Marine Corps, City of Los Angeles Fire Dept., County of Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept., California Science Center, US Air Force, McDonald's and Macy's.

The Power 106 jeep will be at the Job Fair to provide music and giveaways from 10 am to 12 pm.

"The Many Faces of Fairfax HS"


Two of the winning t-shirts will be on sale at Saturday's event. The first place winning design in color is $20. Another design in black & white is $15. There is a limited supply of the t-shirts for sale Saturday, so come early to buy yours! After the event it will be possible to purchase the t-shirts by mail (more info. soon). A committee helped organize students in the creation, design and manufacturing of the t-shirt. The committee will also mentor current students with additional class projects. BRIGHT START WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS: a new, innovative and FREE 4-hour workshop can help parents develop success in their child as well as in their personal lives. The workshop is designed primarily for parents in grades K-4. Session topics include Literacy, Effective Parenting and Personal Wellness. The Workshop will be held in the school cafeteria from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. For more information contact Gary Surdam at (562) 699-4641.
Lion MuralCHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES AREA:

The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks through the Hollywood Girls Club and the Poinsettia Center will be bringing various kids' activities. The DWP will have a giant coloring book. Radio Disney will also be there with their Disney van, a fun booth, games and prizes. More information on storytelling, performers, and other activities will be announced here later this week.
