Dean Friedman at
The University of Liverpool

 

Dean Friedman, the writer of many well known hit songs, such as Lucky Stars, Lydia, and Woman of Mine. spoke to students at the University of Liverpool yesterday (Thursday 29th October 1998) about his songs and music. A captivated audience listened as he explained how he decides the idiom in which to write a song which essentially are about real events and people he knows. He spoke about the musical aspects of songwriting and gave some interesting advice about rhyming. "I sometimes write down a series of phrases that I want to include, then look for the order, then rhyme them." he said.

Tired after a long journey from Cork where he had finnished the Irish leg of his European tour and having travelled up to Liverpool to speak at the University from London, The students who braved the weather where very appreciative of his efforts.

Dean who was born and lives in New York, in the U.S.A. talked about the music which influenced him as a songwriter. "First it was the music from the shows, like Bernstein. In America it was Bob Dylan, but I supose the Beatles were one of the biggest influences when I was growing up."

Using a guitar to illustrate his talk with many examples from his songs he gave an impressive lecture which just underlined his huge talent. Dean appears in at the Neptune Theatre in Liverpool on 2nd November in the next leg of a tour which takes in 34 cities over six weeks.
