EYES OPEN IN DEATH
When death strikes suddenly with her final harsh blow
And earthly life is extinguished, either fast or slow,
Tis strange that the eyes of most creatures great or small
Are wide open when impatient death makes that final call.
An empty stare is seen coming from those earthly eyes,
But we cannot tell what visions are seen, what prize
They really see, the furry friend killed on a busy road
May gaze on sweet pastures green, a hunger free abode.
Lifeless eyes now no longer seeing any earthly thing,
A loved one lying there, some small comfort can it bring
As you imagine the glory that the souls eye may see,
A step closer along the path to heaven for eternity.
If we think of a glorious earthly place we have seen
Then magnify it a hundredfold with imagination keen,
We may at that moment feel the sweet bliss they now know
And even in deep hurt and sorrow some rejoicing show.
