JOY OF READING
A child came home happy from school,
        mom, I can read.
I am too dumb to learn, I’m a fool
        she did plead.
The child played the words as she read
        following along,
What excitement in mom this did feed,
        but I’d get it wrong.
Try mom say the words that you can hear
        look at each word,
No one will laugh, try and never fear,
        say what you heard.
With pointing finger and stumbling speech
        the mother tried,
Slowly, with this aide her daughter could teach
        until mother cried.
I can read, do you know how happy I feel.
        She was full of pride.
She went to her own mother, by her she did kneel,
        her joy hard to hide,
Picked up the Bible and God’s words flowed
        out so sweet and pure,
A thoughtful teacher, a daughter who showed
        how to open a door.
