HOMEWARD BOUND
Rain clouds covered the moon gliding unseen across the sky,
No stars could penetrate the blanket of mist that rolled by,
Darkness was deep, no street lights guided you along the way,
Just sheets of dark rain pouring down that was there to stay.

Few people were southbound on the dismal, wet highway,
Maybe they had all gone home and there wanted to stay.
But we were miles from home and had to travel very far
To find the lights of home as we travelled in our old car.

A little way ahead red rear lights we see, then turn off the road,
It is hard to travel in the rain, you cannot use cruise control mode,
Sometimes you wonder where the road has gone to and you pray
For safety as you drive in pitch black darkness that will not go away.

The rain began to ease off, but the darkness stayed complete,
The headlights did not shine far along the road we had to meet,
Then a thought struck me that we were truly blessed indeed
To have the knowledge of the Saviour, the only light we need.

So though we had to drive in darkness along a lonely road that night,
We are fine as we travel homeward to heaven for we have the light,
It guides us in the path of right and always shows us the way to go,
Unlike that night of darkness where no guiding light did show.
