In a warped plywood shack
the size of a giant's shoebox,
they live together
three adults
five children
breathing in the stink
of the polluted creek
that runs outside.

In days of heat
they suffer the sun's angry rays.
In days of rain and flood
they seek the shelter of God's house.

It is only the sound
of the children's laughter
that gives them hope for tomorrow,
that gives them the heart
to dream of a better place
and a better life.
