Monumental Inscriptions from Canterbury, New Zealand
[ Go straight to surname index ]
These pages contain extracts from the cemetery and monumental transcripts for the province of Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand. The surnames included are those families with whom I have a genealogical connection, although of course not all people with the same surname are necessarily related.
The strays page contains the names of people with other surnames who are mentioned on the gravestones, or buried in the same plots. Where both the maiden and married surnames are given, that woman is in both lists.
The list has been drawn up from typed transcripts held by the New
Zealand Collection of the Canterbury Public Library, in Christchurch.
These transcripts were mostly compiled by volunteers from the New
Zealand Society of Genealogists. The transcripts contain a number of
abbreviations, which I have used here, and they do not always reflect the
exact wording on the gravestone.
Key to the tables:
Entries in the surname tables are sorted by first name, and then date of birth (where possible, always check all possible names).
The strays table contains all people with
other surnames included on the same tombstone or in the same plot as someone with one of the listed surnames. They are sorted by surname and then first name. Some women appear in both lists.
Common abbreviations are a: aged; b: born; bro: brother; d: died; dau: daughter;
husb: husband; p.a.: passed away. Information shown in [square brackets] was obtained from other sources (mostly parish registers or death indexes). The button will take you back to the letter index at the top of the page.
Information in italics is drawn from the burial registers of the cemetery or church and not headstones. I have not included material from burial registers unless there was no gravestone or gravestone information was incomplete, and I have not checked all the burial registers.
