We still remember thanksgiving as a ritual, a feast time, a time to gather with family and friends and stuff ourselves to the point ot great discomfort. However, the most crucial element is overlooked or ignored, "thanksgiving". We seldom give thanks!
The one Person Who is consistently left out of our solemn feasts is God, the One Who is supposed to be the reason for the feast. We tend to remember or commemorate the feast day but to forget God for His grace and His wonderful blessings upon us. Thanksgiving is really not a feast day but an attitude or condition of the soul, a custom in life drawn from real faith in God, the Provider, Sustainer and Savior of life and all that pertains to it.
Coming to God in constant thanksgiving is a privilege; it is a sacred right and not just a formal rite. Thanksgiving is also a duty which we should not take lightly. The Bible commands us to be thankful to God for all He is and does in our lives.
Psalm 150: 14; "offer unto God thanksgiving"; Psalm 100: 4 "enter his gates with thanksgiving"; God's people are promised to be "enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God" (2 Corinthians 9: 11).
Jesus exhibited a heart full of thanksgiving to His Father. When He extended the loaves and fishes to feed the five thousand "He gave thanks" (John 6: 11); likewise, at the communion feast, he gave thanks for the loaf and for the cup (1 Corinthians 11: 24).
We are to come to God "Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Chrsit" (Ephesians 5: 20) and we are to be thankful to God for sending His Son to save us from sin (Colossians 1: 12-14).
If you are not particularly thankful to God for all of His blessings, maybe you've never experienced them, especially, the great blessing of having been set free from sin. Why not bow your head, right now, right where you are and ask Jesus to forgive your sin and be your Savior. If you call on Him with your whole heart, He'll hear you and save you.

Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day!
