I am not suggesting that you should buy these or any
other books from my site,
I'm just saying that getting them online is often
the cheapest.
I always check B&N Online before getting my books
for school.
And often I end up getting them online.

Village
Spaces: Settlement & Society in Northeastern Iran
Focusing on a living community in rural northeastern Iran, Village
Spaces explores the relationship between the material, social, and cultural
dimensions of human settlement and its architecture. Applying current ethnoarchaeological
theories, Horne asserts that settlement anywhere in the world is a dynamic,
flexible adaptation that adjusts to changing conditions with varying degrees
of success. The architectural environment shapes and is shaped by technology
social relations, expressive and communicative behavior, and ideas about
the world and society. Horne moves from the general to the specific - both
analytically and spatially - detailing the processes by which settlement
relates to society in the small agricultural and pastoral villages in Khar
o Tauran on the Iranian Plateau. Shifting her focus from rooms and activities
to houses and households, then to the entire village and its fields, Horne
provides a theoretical framework for studies of settlement throughout the
world. She discusses such issues as the location of settlements in relation
to subsistence choices and social interaction, the architectural expression
of wealth and status, the effects of architectural reuse on the archaeological
record, and the processes of mound formation. The first ethnography to
be written about rural settlement in eastern Iran, Village Spaces presents
a unique database from an area now inaccessible to Western scholars.

Nomads
in Archaeology
The study, based on Cribb's field research in Turkey and Iran and on manypublished sources, concludes that nomad campsites are structured in a distinctive way that bears the imprint of an inherently unstable mode of subsistence. No comparable book exists; many archaeologists, ethnoarchaeologists, and cultural anthropologists have been intrigued by the settlements of nomads and have awaited such a work. The volume includes many informative illustrations anda good bibliography. A useful contribution to the study of the archaeology of small settlements and to the development of archaeological middle-range theory. |

Cultural
Atlas of Mesopotamia & the Ancient Near East
The vitality of the manifold cultures and people of the larger world within which the Gulf flourished is brought out in {this} handsome book. . . . Theterm 'Near East' may suggest homogeneity, an impression which the maps and photographs dispel effectively, showing that this immense area is one of hugely varied environments as well as different cultures. . . . {The book} has valuable sections on 'site-features', some of which are either entirely new (Tell Maddhur) or rarely found in books aimed at the general reader (Al-Untash-Napirisha). Particularly welcome is the inclusion of the unique ivories found in thelast decade at Nimrud. . . . No one leafing through this volume can be in anydoubt as to the amazing richness of Mesopotamian civilization, and the great loss which a destruction of its surviving remains would constitute. |
