The people's will cannot be denied. Nor can their collective stupidity...
Read about some myths you have been told. And read about the absolute disinformation that was put forth in an emotion laced speech to the Australian people. As John Brumby's uncle tells me (with a smile), 'I am a Republican; a ROYAL republican'. Indeed, Australians are ROYAL Republicans. We all have the democratice freedom to voice our opinion.
Accept and Live with Globalisation ...
Monarchists who Favour Direct Elected President are Republicans
Create confusion -> instability -> change is easy
Republicanism is Simply a Cult Driven by Mass Media Read about the damage that could be done to Australia if it were to become a republic (click on Republic Issue). I accept this may be wrong, but my belief is that it is a real threat. Let me remind you, Australia's stability is founded on its history. Why do people around the world aspire to live in Australia? What is it about this place that attracts them? Australians are subjects of a sovereign. Subjects are more than citizens. Citizens accept their place in a homogenous slurry of opinion. In a modern consitutional monarchy, subjects are individuals. Unlike the great republics of the world, the system of consitutional monarchy has evolved since the 1700s, when the republican system was born. Republican heads of state have far more real power than our sovereign and what is more, they impose their power in many ways. Australians are uniquely free - far more so than many understand. But I suppose we could rewrite history and have no history. What would this lead to? Republican's want to strip out society and leave us to find our own alternative, but our these fantasies really what is best for us?
If you question anything, question the motives of republicans
Reprehensible Tactics of Republicans
Consider these actual comments: Comments of two Australian Army majors
Pro-Monarchist - able to engage in debate
Anti-Monarchist - wants to stop debate
Why? I have no idea, but I think ...
I think it has Passed
But Why Were Australians so Enthusiastic for a Republic?
Regardless - I commit to be loyal to a democratic change

Toronto Star newspaper 31 May 2002
We want to keep monarchy OTTAWA — The monarchy may be tired, regressive, outdated and irrelevant for many Canadians — but it's ours. Canadians don't know much about it — only 5 per cent of those polled know that Queen Elizabeth II is Canada's head of state — but the desire to abolish the monarchy has dropped dramatically since 1994, and only a minority of Canadians want to give it up. EKOS Research Associates found that this contradiction is at the heart of Canadians' perceptions of the monarchy. A clear majority — 55 per cent — agreed with the statement: "The monarchy is one of those important things that provides Canadians with an unique identity separate from the U.S." Only 31 per cent disagreed. But an almost equal proportion — 52 per cent — agreed with the statement: "The monarchy is an outdated and regressive institution that has no real relevance to most Canadians today;" 33 per cent disagreed. According to Frank Graves, of the research group, 25 per cent of those polled agreed with both positions. But Canadians don't know much about Canada's constitutional monarchy. Of those asked: "Who is the head of the State in Canada?" 69 per cent replied the Prime Minister; 9 per cent said the Governor-General, and only 5 per cent knew the answer — the Queen. When asked which term best describe the monarchy and the royal family, 35 per cent answered "boring," 52 per cent "interesting," 44 per cent "irrelevant," 46 per cent "relevant," 22 per cent "vibrant," and 59 per cent "tired." The poll was based on 1,217 interviews conducted between May 27 and May 29, resulting in a margin of error plus or minus 2.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
From the Toronto Star newspaper on 6 Feb 2002 Elizabeth of Canada Yes, she's ours. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, has been on the job, as she puts it, for 50 years today. And Canadians couldn't have wished for a more dedicated, duty-driven monarch to serve as symbolic head of our family. Our Golden Jubilee congratulations go out to her. The young Elizabeth who acceded to the throne on Feb. 6, 1952, would not know Canada today, so much have we changed. Then we were a people steeped in British history, attitudes, family ties and tradition. Today, we reach for calamari, dim sum and dal, as soon as fish-and-chips. Elizabeth has seen nine Canadian prime ministers come and eight go: Louis St. Laurent, John Diefenbaker, Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, Joe Clark, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell. She may yet outlast Jean Chrétien. She will be forever the Monarch who in 1982 signed the documents bringing home to Canada the Constitution, then known as the British North America Act of 1867. That day Canadians held true to an ancient, unbroken political and legal heritage, even as we affirmed that no British law would bind us, ever again. On royal trips Elizabeth, now 75, has shown herself to be a shrewd and gracious figure. She has won over Canadians with her devotion to the Commonwealth, her fondness for this country and her humour. Her face still lights up for excited children. They must be a welcome break from tedious protocol and fawning courtiers. She will be remembered, too, for coping gracefully as Charles and the rest of the dysfunctional Windsors, upstaged by Diana in a TV age, went through messy divorces, made fools of themselves and let her down. In good years and bad, Elizabeth has been a symbol of unity and an exemplar of duty. If the monarchy has lost some of its gilded magic during her long reign, the fault is not hers. If fewer Canadians today profess a deep attachment to it, the change has been in us, not her. She commands our respect, and deserves our good wishes. God save the Queen of Canada.
