Muriel Brand School
The Muriel Brand School opened its doors on State
Mines in Brakpan in 1969 with 27 pupils and a staff of 18 personnel. As the
pupil numbers increased it became evident that larger premises were needed and
in May 1970 an architect was appointed to review such requirements. The Brakpan
Town Council offered land to the new school in August 1970 and during September
1973 the first sod was turned on the site of the new school in Brenthurst.
September 9,1977 saw the closing of the State Mines and the move to the
wonderful new premises in Brenthurst, Brakpan - fulfilling the dreams and
aspirations of the dedicated members of the Eastern Transvaal Cerebral Palsy
Association. The first matric class wrote their finals at the end of 1981 and
by 1984. enrollment at the school had reached 331 - 126 more than the number
for which the school was originally designed.

Facilities now include a heated swimming pool,
tennis and netball courts, computers as a learning and communication medium and
the remedial teaching department. The medical staff include physiotherapists;
psychologists; speech therapists; occupational therapists; an ear, nose and
throat specialist; pediatrician, orthopedic surgeon; neurologist; optometrist;
